    I'm no doctor, obviously. One anecdote isn't very strong evidence. The idea of sitting too close to the TV ruining your eyes was a radiation/ energy concern, I always though, not having to do with focusing your eyes. Also, it gets the kids out of the way of the TV.

    Flat screens on a wall, instead of a computer monitor reduces 'close-work', using your eyes constantly focused up close will ruin them, they say. More prevalent in our screen-oriented world.
