    Portable Winches?

I think that tripod would somehow have to be guyed to something behind it or it would just fall over.

Keep in mind that the more legs of line you use, (such as using a pair of double sheave pulleys) the slower that log is gonna move, and the longer the rope you are gonna require. I prefer to try to get away with just using either a straight pull or a 2:1 (winch line going to a block attached to...

    Portable Winches?

Use a 3/4 rope connecting the log to the block (pulley) closest to the log. Your other line (1/2" is fine) going from the winch around the sheaves in the two blocks is only going to be pulling 2500lb (or 1400 lb - depending which dia drum is used), but it all adds up, so a 4:1 is going to be...

I bought the larger drum, tried it, went back to the smaller one. You gain speed, but lose about 1000 pounds of pull. Buddy has one, and prefers the large drum. He sets up a 4 or 5:1 double block MA system when he needs more pull. Same fellow also owns a Lewis winch, and it has sat unused...

16-strand 1/2" Arbormaster is all I use for winching, and it holds up really well. You kinda need to be watching what you are winching, AND the drum at the same time, because momentary slack in the line is all that it takes to get a wrap of line on the drum to cross over another wrap, and...

    Portable Winches?

It is a durable piece of kit. Bear in mind that although it will accommodate a decent size log, it is only so big (~20"dia), so if you are frequently into larger wood, you are gonna have to taper the end of the log to get the cone to fit.

Might have been me that posted some cone negativity. The cone has a tendency to slide off the end of the log when you are winching on any kind of a downhill grade. Or level ground, for that matter. If I'm winching up a bank with stumps or large rocks, I usually attach the winch line to the...

    Portable Winches?

A buddy has one - hasn't used it for about 15 years. 1. very heavy (his is attached to an old 066) 2. a real PITA to unwind (free spool) the cable sometimes, depending on how well the cable previously spooled onto the drum.

Congrats! One thing that will drive you bonkers is having the rope entangle itself into a nightmare on the drum. Easily happens if momentary slack in the line occurs whilst winching. Be vigilant! I've used that winch on two occasions to get my chipper (Bandit 65) pulled back up a long steep...

    Portable Winches?

I own one. Cannot say enough good things about it. Sometimes it sits around unused for a month or longer, but then starts on first pull. Recommend you get the tree mount kit for it. Spendy, but helps keep the unit level.
