Do you toss them at 50% like most people who don't bother with maintaining the depth gauges? I wouldn't blame you if you did, just trying to better gauge how much life you get out of the files. I honestly don't know how many files per chain I use, but I know I could easily sharpen 5-10 chains...

Per filing? I used to use about 2 old Oregon files to sharpen a 32" chain that hit pavement without bearing down into it. I've gotten my files by the dozen from Frawley's or Stahl's, so you could try ordering from them. Could be that I run my files duller than most, but that wouldn't explain my...

Could have been a defective raker, any manufacturer can mistakenly chrome plate a few, and it is practically impossible to break through at least without damaging the file. I imagine it is hard to just plate the tooth. I'm surprised by your findings with Oregon files. They last me longer than...

The Oregon files I get just say Swiss made, but they have been very good. Brian is right on every point as far as Oregon chain goes. When I first started cutting, I would cut half a hickory log into firewood, like 10 cuts, before needing to sharpen the chain, but when I first used a Stihl chain...

None as far as I know, but they can be easier to file. Better than paying over $600 for a reel. My dealer's hired help did quote the book, but I know of another local dealer that may be much better.

Chain by the reel should always be cheaper, but when I checked with my Stihl dealer, which is a sorry excuse for a dealer, the reel was no cheaper. Oregon reels from Logger chain are a good price, or Husqvarna reels from Stahl's, but Husqy doesn't make any full skip. Archer is low priced, but...

GB noses might fit. Sugihara might have one too.
