You're on the right track. I would start the bury of the tail closer to the brummell. This allows more pinching action- the outside strands will keep the tail from unravelling.
You could also gently lock stitch the tail in before putting the core back on.
I prefer the thinner finished product, so I don't do a full crossover. The manufacturer recommends a 4-6" bury on each side. I know some people who go shorter than that on their own gear :)
