What you both say coincides with what I think...but I've been hearing some things lately.

If you plant a tree just a hair too high, the top roots will be exposed to open air. This might not be the worst thing for the tree. Planting it too deep is very bad. If sunlight strikes the tops of roots, can this prompt the roots to form sprouts/suckers at the base of the tree? love nick
