    If I was gonna be that freaked out by it, then I would simply take a double wrap with my lanyard and slowly blunder my way to the top. FTR, I've never done that yet.

    Go up and down a spar 10 feet for 20 reps. Increase the height as you feel comfortable.

    I'll do that occasionally, but on straight stems I like the lanyard to keep me closer to the tree.

    Or to just lean back and walk around the tree sans any handgrip, just to feel more secure using your gaffs.

    It's just an unusual move you master so you'll feel more at ease later in the Real World when you're doing it. I do it all the time working my way around a big cut using a larger saw- walking around the tree with both hands on the 044, 066, whatever. I agree. ;)

    My only worry is damaging ropes.

    It's always nice to have a line set and someone belaying you as you spur up, but you can just as easily go without it.
