Climbing and Trimming Mexican fan palms

A customer took a pic of me upside down in a big wash fan, just after I'd lifted the first few fronds of the bottom skirt, a startled mother pigeon flew right at me, nailed me between the eyes with her beak, scaring me so bad I did a back flip through my slack chain lanyard, and hung there...

I know mate, and no, never the bleach bucket, but I've nicked a few bucket liners over the decades on lots different makes of bucket trucks. I like the oldest Asplundhs with the onboard side fed pto driven chippers! Everything was better in the 60's n 70's...

Buckets? Buckets! I don't need no stinkin buckets! One of my best friends got slapped against the cab cage, by his bucket lanyard, busting him up something awful, when his Holan bucket's upper boom failed going over center. He still likes em, I still hates em! Jomo

Climbing and Trimming Mexican fan palms

My brother n I balled n slicked every date palm on the old MCRD military base using 5 gallon buckets of bleach to rev our saws up in between each fusarium infected tree. Birds spread far more fusarium spores than chainsaws ever have. Much like the fireblight bacteria, but fungal, and spread by...

Talkin bout MaGargoyle eh? http://tcia.org/PDFs/Safety/Beware_Hidden_Dangers_Palms.pdf Jim Whorral's son, Vern, does the best date palm slickin I know of these days, the rest have retired. Jim n Rich worked together many years. Vern's a bucketboy when slickin dates these days, and he don't...

You must be in pretty good shape to prefer slicking dates with a midsize saw, over peelin fans with a couple of carpet knives my friend!

Climbing and Trimming Mexican fan palms

There's no need to leave the ground to get a real good idea of just how strenuous it truly is Chris. Just grab a carpet knife, or even a boxcutter, and bust the bottom collars of any fan palm, from the ground. More of a walk around while cutting very precisely, than a walk about. The...

Climbing and Trimming Mexican fan palms

Every frond/collar on those palms has a 360 degree attachment to the trunk, which must be cut with a knife 360 around, with less than a quarter inch between each cut. Precision cutting along with a fair degree of power's necessary to progress upwards. 4-5 cuts, footlock up, repeat. Monotonous n...

Looks like 1500 bucks worth using an extension ladder to access the heads n tie in for peeling from the bottom up. There's a rhythmic art to peeling from a climbing line with no gaffs and a carpet knife in each hand. Probably one of the most physically exhausting things to do in a tree I can...

Unless you've peeled wash fans before, and are adept at it with peeling knives? Might be wise to pass on the peeling aspect of the job. These days I charge about 5 bucks a foot with no gaffs to peel wash fans. Jomo
