I called it momentum Stig, the saw's b/c is your 3rd hand and I always have a "feel" what position it is to aim the direction of the face cut. Repetitive motion makes perfect results. Works the best in conifers growing in thick stands with very few limbs and only a bushy top.
But now walk up to...
Whether its conifer or a broad canopy hardwood the key is to get the main stem or center of codominent stems to target of lay.
When I hand felled logged for years 8 hrs a day 5 days a week I could lay a tree to target without pausing to think it through. Just came natural as your always...
Grendel,
With a properly tensioned guy line with no stretch (Amsteel is recommended) no compensation in the gunsight to lay is needed.
no matter the feet in sidelean the tree will end up landing in position that is 90 degrees from the anchor point of the guy line.
With a guy line with stretch...
Reg, I just edited my last post about you question "if I set my guyline redirect lower then my undercut." The answer I originally gave was "lower to help improve hinge wood strength with more downward pressure on the stump."
But as I said that while fumbling the little keys on my Android I...
Thanks Reg,
I'm not sure what your question is about setting the redirect the same height as the undercut.
I used the porty when using the Masdaam rope puller. But now for anchoring a redirect block pulley for a guy line this is now what I use as the 1st pic shows, no chance of breaking this...
Still freezing cold here La becasse, long range forecast for melting temps that will amount to anything not until 2nd week of April.
Butch, the poor wood peckers are starving at the moment , by now there should be no snow on the ground and insects are abundant. The red headed pilated wood...
I removed two 75 ft tall white spruce for a customers today that were leaning over his cabin, not safe to climb due to a pesky wood pecker hollowing out the bases of them.
So I had to fell them with the aid of a guy line.
Yes a picture says a thousand words.
From looking at Gary's photo if the bigger tree was to be pulled off the smaller one with a truck . There might not be enough room to get the truck inside the fence, so I would attach a block or pulley to the base of a tree a treelength away from the tree...
Stig, I agree a 2 square foot of backstrap on a 60" tree would be too much for a pole saw of any kind.
Only thing I can think of is make a back cut into the tree a foot or so below the back strap if there is room . Cut up "almost" to the line of fibers where the back strap starts behind the...
Jim, from what I can see in Gary's photo I wouldn't even attempt to cut the smaller spring poled tree. I'd winch the big tree off the little one by the butt end, better yet use my truck with a redirect bull rope if needed.
A spring pole tree with it's top pinned to the ground or bent laying on...
I should have added a little more info here guys. My pole saw is a Silky saw blade on the end of Jameson fiberglass 8 ft pole extensions.
On tree removals my Jameson pole with a Big Shot slingshot is always on hand, with extra 8 ft extension poles along with the Silky saw head.
Cutting a back...
Reg, on the coast what direction is the natural lean for your conifer tree tops on level ground?
South east natural lean in conifers here in flat ground Manitoba is what we have. When I clear cut logged in the winter we have good felling procedure with the dominant wind from the N.W. working...
Thanks for the kind words Reg. With todays BigShot, shot bags and line, rigging a tree for removal at ground level is easy to do.
I have a thread called "My advanced gunfight technique" on the house's tree falling and rigging forum. I posted a good selection of guy lining techniques on the last...
Guy lines do the jobs where you couldn't do without otherwise. Thanks to a few courses I took years ago on guy lines I have since worked alone without an employee and can still say I never have turned a job down yet. Do less climbing and more felling.
Here's a 86 ft 3 stem poplar I felled...
