I was wondering about that. I thought that one would use spurs OR a rope, not both at the same time. Makes great sense, i was wondering how to rest while on spurs. Must be safer too, having a line on the tree while using spurs and a flip line. Thanks for the posts Sean.
I have been finding...
Good advice. I am able to tie a bowline around myself in the dark with my gloves on so that my brothers can hoist me out of a burning basement.
But i do need more practice. I am just one chapter into Mr. Beranak's book.
I want to learn too. The kits are attractive, but I have sometimes found when I buy any kind of kit that something in the kit did not work for me or was otherwise not needed. Maybe it is different in tree climbing.
I am going to piece one together.
These guys will Know what to do.
What kind of spurs do you use Butch?
I am also having a hard time picturing your sideways shin guard technique.
I assume that the pads are replaceable? If I were to say want to try something else Nick?
I think I will get the working climber dvds and the Climbers guide or companion. I am not sure which book is right for me, maybe both?
I wear White's loggers for fire/sawyer work. I figured they would be the ones for climbing too as they have a ridiculously strong arch.
Thanks everybody...
Yeah, we will be climbing fools when we are done!:)
I am starting to get it. Thanks for the recommendations Nick and Butch. I really like cruising by Treestuff and really appreciate the links.
I will be getting down to a more reasonable weight fellers, fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go...
My lineman friend is about my size, just a little taller. I will see if he has any used spurs or what might work for a big guy. I am officially back on the Weight Watchers (hopefully for good this time) and will be getting down to a more reasonable climbing weight. Gotta pass the pack test...
Those look nice. I have read that the aluminum ones have a 240 weight limit. I need something useful but affordable as i will not be getting paid for this adventure.:)
Should i swing by EBAY, or is it better to buy new?
There is no local tree shop in the area, or even people i know that...
Well, I guess I should start asking questions here.
Looks like I will be getting a saddle soon and I will buy some books and dvds. I have been looking at spurs, mostly Buckingham steel climbers, are these good ones? I don't have a lot to spend so I guess carbon fiber is out for now. What...
Thanks! I guess i need to see stuff like that! The outcome would be much different in my case, you simply can not get this much mass moving that quickly and have a good outcome!
You dont suppose someone did that to the climber on purpose do you? Seems like they would know better. If it was...
Thanks. I have been trying to figure out the terminology. I will go to some websites.
My tree is unfortunately a cottonwood, but I have a lot of friends in the hills with some big P-pine and some big doug fir.
I'm the guy that wondered off the street and saw tree climbing that says to himself, that looks great! I have no gear or people. I do have a tree picked out though.
Well, upon reading all the great tips put together by the members here, I have decided that I am not a beginner. I am somewhat LESS skilled than a beginner! But, I would like to work hard to become a beginner.
Where would one start to learn how to climb trees?
