Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

Looks great. It's a great feeling when you get to that point where you can hand file and get good results. That little gullet beak will slow things down. Square or round, gullets like to be hogged out.

Top plate angle on Stihl square ground, RSLK, is minimal, maybe 10*. I think that's why it rip cuts so well.

You are getting there. Keep the gullet hogged out, square doesn't tolerate anything in the gullet.

There are a bunch of options if you Google double bevel chisel bit file. Only way to go. You've got me all stirred up. I'm going to have to go and square file the RSC on my 395 now.

I file from the same side of the tooth as I do when round filing. I don't know anyone that does it that way. I am totally ambidextrous, so that really helps. Like I mentioned, my 036Pro was cutting like a 460. Now imagine putting square ground chain, with the rakers way down, and an 8 pin...

I think it takes less power to run square chisel. My 036Pro ran about as well as the 460 I'm running right now with regular chain. Some say it's no good for hardwoods but I cut a lot of hardwood with no problem. You really want to be in clean cutting conditions. Square ground has no tolerance...

It doesn't take many file strokes to convert back to round if you don't like it, or hit a rock etc. I recently converted a round over to square after a bad rock hit. One of those to seeif I could do it things. I could.:/: It took about 20 strokes per cutter. Not bad considering the damage.

Interesting. Maybe it was the Oregon square that I had that shared the same cutter as round filed.

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

I'm not sure I understand the outside in filing. I file just like a round filed chain, from behind the chrome. I can file just as fast as round now. I think it's the muscle memory, like you have mentioned. I think being ambidextrous really helps as well. One thing I found I was doing in the...

I find it is very finicky. Either the cutters are well formed, and it's amazing, or they are a little off and it's the same, or even a little slower than round filed. When I first put the 20" loop on the 394 that had been rocked, even though I had sharpened it, I was unimpressed. I could just...

I've been running some square chain again thanks to Skwerl hooking me up with a couple of loops. The first go around with the file, I was worried I'd lost it, but the second time everything clicked and the cutters are coming out great. I ordered some Save Edge files from Bailey's, and they seem...

That's cool. And yes, they do seem proud of them. Glad I can freehand sharpen.:/:

I'm getting a good cutting speed out of my filed chains, but they don't look that nice.

What brand of file do you use? I don't get that nice of a corner with the Pferd double bevels I have.

Cool! It does indeed feel good when you finally get it right.:)

The paperwork that came with my new Stihl chain says 20 degree top plate angle. Just a little less than the witness mark, which should be 30.

How is your top plate angle? I believe stock Stihl chisel is 20 degrees from perpendicular to the bar.

I cut about 8mbf of white pine back in September with my 036 running square ground chain. Most trees were 18" to 24" dbh. It made it a nice saw for both felling and limbing. Runs pretty close to my Husky 66, although I do have square chain for that as well.:/:

I've cut a lot of firewood with the square ground chisel, it definitely made a difference, but only in clean wood.;) My stock 394xp and 18" red maple rounds, it sure felt like a hot saw to me.

Maybe I should change my name, then I might know who you're talking about.
