Yup. All you are doing is using the tail as the anchor and pull towards the tail.

Mount the winch on the trailer tongue, run cable under trailer. Mount pulleys on trailer tail. Cable runs under trailer, back over the tail and back to the choker eye at the front of the trailer. Hook up and winch off like turnbuckle. Guy up here has a truck set up like that.. shit just rolls...

Three strand is a good choice. As is true blue. I have an old beat up hank retired to Harding and such that just refuses to die Old retired arbormaster lines work well as stated. Retired rope keeps earning money like this.
