Ohio does seem to have more than its share of cops. I drove uninspected the other day and couldn't wait to get legal. Tickets are too expensive these days.
Is it a PIA to set anvil clearance? Corn choppers were not that bad. Basically same kind of machine. It made a big difference on them if the clearance was set properly.
It was one of those things the first time is difficult, but each time gets easier.
When you rebuild an engine they recommend you replace the connecting rod bolts. Not cheap to do but I did have one break when I was torqing it and I was way under the torque spec when it broke. Catastrophic failure would be way more expensive. A lot of head bolts are one time use these days...
Hard to find honest competent mechanic or shop. I bet there is someone of a back yard caliber in your area who would be happy to keep your stuff fixed Nick. Networking maybe?
I have been running Supertech outboard two stroke oil as a lubricity additive. A little over an ounce per gallon. Cheap insurance. Biodiesel at the same ratio is better..Need to get some for summer use. It is supposed to attract moisture in the winter.
Most states use clear diesel for on road and low sulfur. Red is for off road and they tell me there isn't more sulfur in it like there used to be in NY state. Don't you have that system in Montana?
The pre filter should be easy to see if it is plugged in person. The picture doesn't show enough detail. The dark area is the paper element. Diesel is pretty clear liquid over here now unless it is dyed red for off road.
That sounds like a good place to start. If your manual does not give step by step for replacing the filter look on the web. You have to bleed the fuel system.
Another possibility is a crack or loose fitting on the line coming from the tank.
