    I have found Hard Maple to be a pretty slow drier. I might be trying the basement drying method myself this winter. Big old farm house might get a wood burner in the basement. Air movement and warm temps you can just about hear the wood dry. I love the clicking noise some wood makes after it...

    Bet there isn't much air flow at the bottom of a heap, Al. I have put 4 pallets in a square, stacked the perimeter, and tossed the center full. I might try 9 pallets and stacking in a circle.

    White Oak smoke can be quite strong. Red is mild, Chesnut quite pleasant.

    Good to know. I burned a lot of my reserve firewood last winter and didn't get a lot cut. A lot of snow and no frost. I need to get a jump on EAB trees. It is around but the trees have not started dying yet. I need to get out and drop some now so they start drying for this winter. Always...

    I read if you drop a tree and let the leaves dry out before you cut it up they remove a lot of water. Haven't tried it yet.

    Somewhere I read the fastest way to dry wood natuarally is to stack it in a circle. Seems like some kind of chimney device might have been used.
