Don't do anything to weaken the pole...the tension on them is amazingly high when you really load it up. Just set it up the way my pics showed...you'll be happy with it that way, I bet :).

Oh no, Frans...an eight year old could pull that thing down to within 2 feet of the end of the pole, no problem. Old man that I am, it doesn't stain me in the least to get everything available out of 8 feet of pole. I'm sure pulleys would make it even easier, but this is not hard at all to do...
