Been there, Jonny...nasty, I agree. I was always blessed with enough funding to be able to rotate ropes when the weather was wet, or when I'd pitched out a rope to make it hard to use and needed a serious wash/dry. I think it's a smart place to spend a few shekels...you get quite a bit more...

The reason I prefer Woolite over something like Dawn is only because it rinses out more easily and thoroughly. Dawn or other strong detergents won't hurt the rope, I do not believe. You just need to be sure to rinse well, because any residual soap will attract dirt and grit, and shorten rope...

For a machine, either daisy chain it, or put it in a mesh bag, then use a soft laundry soap like Woolite. Use warm water, not hot. By hand, as you say, in a bathtub or my preference, in a utility sink (washing by hand is a long, physical process, and doing it on your knees sux :)). Warm...

Since it seems every hitch you have tried is unreliable on your one host rope (is this right?), perhaps there is the problem, as you posit. I'd try something else, something fat and of long standing production and use...maybe Blue Streak. For smaller diameters, Poison Ivy or it's variants...

Very curious, WoodCutr. I've never known a distel to not grab.

I rather doubt your weight is the issue with friction hitch function. My wife weighs 105 without gear, and operates with friction hitches quite well. Have you tried a distel hitch? It's too grabby for most people, but perhaps for your specific needs, it may be useful.
