I know, Fi. The photo is a mere shadow of the real thing. It was amazing.

Indeed :D. I've only ridden a mule a few times, but I sure admire them.

I understand, Stig. I have something of a love/hate relationship with the desert. I find it fascinating and beautiful. Also at times scary and intimidating. Almost always it has a harsh edge that must be negotiated carefully. I'd NEVER choose to live there, but I'd not want to miss out on...

It both is and isn't to my mind and experience with horses, Butch. Many of the trails are horribly rocky and uneven, requiring a horse and rider to negotiate ledges, both up and along, with multiple high steps and much high exposure to cliff edges. Any horse that is the slightest bit sketchy...

A few more, for the die-hards :). The rainbow shot is at Big Morongo Canyon, Stig...site of your vermillion flycatcher saga. Before that, Rainbow Canyon, north of Bishop, CA. The rest are in the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson. In the mix, some fairly out of the ordinary free flowing...

No worries, Stig. If there's anything we'll tolerate here, it's hijacked threads and wandering off topic :D. M and I have been pretty lucky too. The spring a few years back that we spent in the deep southeastern CA desert was also a fine flower year for the cactus and wildflowers, but just...

Thank you all. I appreciate your patience with the number of pictures, I know I sometimes go overboard on that.

Blue jay? See what you actually posted...:) Now you understand, you really did blow your birder creds all to hell, my friend :P. :D

It's all about the tradeoffs, as with most choices in life. If and when we get there, I expect our choice of RV would be some variation of a pickup camper. Seems to fit our wants and needs best, perhaps.

You have to set up and break down an RV, too. Quicker than the tent, usually, but still an RV has it's demands as well. And we far more often than not plan on camps of several days to more than a week in one site, so we minimize the unpack/pack hassles. The best thing for us is that there are...

Last batch, and it's a big one. Down southwest AZ again, to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Super place to finish off...weather perfect, cactus on the cusp of the best bloom year in the last 15, said some old timers. We just caught the beginnings. If you look closely in the 8th pic, you...

Back up to some mountains now...Cochise Stronghold. US Forest Service campground, old school basic with vault toilet and no water. 6 natural bottom creek fords on the USFS road to get there, deepest was about 12 inches, no big rocks, no problem for the Subaru. Pretty quiet place.

We camped for 9 days at Karchner Caverns State Park. Nice well developed campground, in a good place for visiting a bunch of other interesting areas for day trips. Some from Ramsey Canyon, Coronado National Memorial, and Karchner itself. The caves are spectacular. We took one tour, would do...

More of that jay... I can see why the missed call there, without any sense of scale available.

Walrus... :P That's a Mexican jay, Stig. No wonder he looks grumpy :D. More, with some special emphasis on the CCC stone work. The cranes were photographed down on the playa below the mountains.

This batch is from one of our favorite places...Chiricahua National Monument. I may break the forum with this many pics :). The CCC did absolutely amazing work here in the 1930's. Trail design and construction is without par anywhere, in my experience. That skinniest column in the third pic...

Here's a start. From near Joshua Tree NP, then over to Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, then down to Sonoita and Patagonia southeast of Tucson. Many wildflowers in the former area, many birds in the later areas. Lots of moisture in the southwest this winter.

Sorry...just made some room :). The Magnificent is exactly that ;). We only saw one male, but it was a good clear close up view. At Ramsey Canyon. Pretty lucky to get the vermillion to stay put for all that viewing. In our experience, they are pretty busy; except maybe early morning...
