    Stihl 500i

Referring to my beloved 044, and 064 Magnus. Part of a joke with Bermy.

Are we still talking about combi-cans and discontinued Stihls? :D

Hell's bells, girl :)...my "older one" has no flow control at all. Flat plastic plates that screw down under the nozzles to seal. That beastie has to be near to if not over 40 years old now. I suppose that means it's "really, really older"!

Looks fine to me, sir. That's a saw.

    Stihl 500i

My stock 064, besides just a little opening up of the muffler, pulls 32 inches of full skip chisel in 40+ inches of old growth Doug fir like no tomorrow. It only asks for more. Hell of a saw, old as it is. Of course, I give it the great advantage of razor sharp chain. Any saw can impress...

    Stihl 500i

Been telling this tale for more than a decade now, re the 064. Beast and a half. Today's saws are hard pressed to match. Though under advisement from my good friend Stig, I'd not turn a 500 down, nossir!

That is sure a nice looking saw body; small for the displacement. I sure don't NEED one...but need and want are pretty interchangeable for me, these days :P.

Ah, yes. Truth. You can feel that difference easily.

My friend, you dial your rakers in far more closely than I do :). I have no idea their measured position. I file them by eye, following many decades of use of an ancient Stihl raker guide. But sure, I can get away with a somewhat more aggressive depth of cut with Douglas, Noble, Grand...

    Stihl 500i

Smooth in the cut...a true desired characteristic in any case. But the chain choice made, the grunt available from the powerhead, then applied to different wood types? Hard to credit the saw alone. As a simple example...I get super smooth cuts in PNW conifers with full skip chisel, on my...

Yessir, that one is cutting well.

Nutball, you are wise to think this way. I'm looking for feedback on fiber breaking as the tree slowly moves to the face, as this can happen before there is discernible opening of the backcut...or the saw slightly bogging as the tree minutely shifts towards the backcut, trying to set back...

    Stihl 500i

I'm sure Stig does wear hearing ppe. But there are certain times during the falling of certain trees where I wanted to be able to hear the tree talking. I'd pop off one muff, or pull a plug when those times arrived... Maybe Stig does that as well. The decibels add up over time, especially...
