    That is a crater from which lava flowed, Jim. LOTS of lava. 100,000+ acres covered up to 100 feet deep in places. After the lava stopped flowing, the crater collapsed into the void near the surface. Only 10,000 years ago, give or take. The youngest eruptions in that area are only 950 years...
