Yup...or at least blindly hunt closely through our closets.

    pressure washing climbing rope ?

Well sure...old ones get forgotten. Only the oldsters like me sometimes remember :).

The good ones are worth the effort to read through from start to finish.

Ran across this thread when following a guest on the "who's online" page...as I am wont to do from time to time. I read through it, it's not that long, but has some pretty valuable info in it. I hope y'all won't be put off by my bringing it forward, but I thinks it's worth a read especially...

Not to try to change anyone's mind about the wisdom of retiring life lines on age alone, because no one should give a climber grief over that decision... Many a year ago now, at a Region 6 USFS Tree Climbing Instructor workshop that I facilitated, we drop tested (to the best of our admittedly...

Hey there, Kenny. Good to read you.

First noting that 95 out of 100 of the trees I worked in my 30+ years in the biz were conifers of some stripe, I usually was able to keep pitch fouling to a manageable level, meaning spot cleaning once a week or so would do. Except when harvesting cones. Up there in the small wood, thin...

Doesn't hurt even a tiny bit, but then you live in high humidity land. Not as critical in some other places, perhaps.

I don't think it's a bad idea. I would do so by soaking overnight or more in a half full laundry sink of water with Goop applied to the worst areas. Start with fairly warm water. Agitate by hand as often as you have time to. Drain and redo as often as you have time to. Rinse and hand...

I can offer one other brand name, GoJo Creme hand cleaner. It's similar to Goop, but generally not quite as effective in my experience. But lacking Goop, I'd give the GoJo a try.

Try any of the non-abrasive content hand cleaner creams. Warm water and working the stuff in with your hands helps a lot. Rinsing, the same.

You've picked conifer cones Stig, I know...so you know just how covered in pitch you can end up. It's a real hard thing to get cleaned off, for sure. I bet our dogs would help, after we cover our bodies with mayonnaise :D.

If you want to get the rope clean, use Goop. If you want to eff around with all those wannabe methods, go for it. You'll eventually learn :). Canola? Give me a break, Sean :). You'll have this result, imo...a rope that's still sticky where the pitch is bad before you begin, and slimy...

Tim, stay away from the Permatex with pumice, your first link. That is definitely bad for your rope. The one without may work, but I have had some experience with it or at least a very similar product and was not particularly impressed. Thanks for the Goop link.

There are some products specifically designed for the job. Lifeline is one of the best, and I've used it several times with good success. Warm water in a deep sink, a hefty dollup of Lifeline and some serious hand work will take care of most pitch and anything else, too. Me, after reading up...

You have put your finger on the reason not to do it. Plus, that won't move the pitch anyway, in my opinion. Why not just clean the pitch off properly?
