    Possible re-awakening of slumbering 048.

I'd just run it at 50:1...or a smidge less fuel to oil, as that's what I tend to do on all my saw mix. I usually mix a little less than a gallon of gas (never under 0.9 gallon, never over 0.95 gallon) with a gallon spec bottle of Stihl Ultra. Or something similar percentage-wise if mixing...

The serial number on this 048 is 112802200. So I reckon that makes this one the 895th individual saw with the uprated engine. Wooowooo!

Great information, Eddie. I'll get that serial number later today. We were wondering what the hp rating was. And thanks, Al.

Got another question for the guys who remember this sort of stuff from the wayback days... The 048 I have does not have a chain brake. It's got the hand guard mounted where a chain brake paddle would be. The photocopied owner's manual I got from Stihl depicts a chain brake on this model...

I was able to get a photocopy of the original 048 owner's manual mailed direct to me for free from the Stihl USA website. It lists engine specs thus: Displacement-76 cubic cm (4.64 cu. in.) Bore-52 mm (2.05 in.) Stroke-36 mm (1.42 in.) Max. permissible engine speed w/ bar and chain- 12,000 rpm...

Good advice, Gary. I'm gonna walk in to my local shop for grins and giggles, see what they might have, but these other possible sources are great to have too.

The muffler does have a side port, up near the top corner of the muffler on the clutch side.

Al, what are the differences between the muffler types, pressure can and baffle? For that matter, what is generally different about AV Super designation models compared to their plain jane counterparts? For instance, my shed contains two 056 saws, one of which carries the AV Super plate, one...

Thanks very much for the part numbers. Do you think my local Stihl dealer can order them in?

It lives, it lives!! Flat azz amazing, folks. This thing has been shelved for at least 10 years, I have on good authority. I found it in my inheirited equipment/tool shed when I took this roads management job at Zigzag. No bar/chain on it, no sparkplug in it. Half a tank of who only knows...

What's the skinny on these old beasts? I have an opportunity to mess around with one...is it worth it? Looks pretty nice, not beat at all, it's an ooold FS saw. 76 cc, 17 lb. powerhead...heavy mother. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow.
