Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

Thanks, Sean, I do know about it. I'm fortunate enough to have 2 local dumps that are ridiculously cheap for chip disposal, so it's easy to roll it into the job price. Also, I'm amazed at how many friends/customers want them for mulch on their properties. It will be interesting to see their...

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

Okay, finally some time to catch up. The chipper was delivered this past Wednesday, and it's been put to work. It's an absolute beast, chomping up 15"+ diameter maple & apple logs with barely any feed wheel reversals. This bad boy will be the primary for all the take-downs/prunings coming up...

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

Bump So, ran a similar test last Friday on the M15RX/1621 models (145HP GM gas and 122HP Cat Diesel). As the throat and drum on these are bigger (16" x 21" vs 14" x 15" throat, 23.75 in. wide x 21-3/8 in. diameter vs. 21 in. diameter x 14-1/4 in. wide drum), they both were able to handle larger...

Nice setup you've got on that hand truck, Sean. Did it come with those nice, oversized tires, or did you add them on?

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

Status update: Spent 3 hours with the dealer today going over and chip testing the 2 M12R/1415 models I originally listed (they are leftover 2018 models, so they are knocking a couple thousand off each). I had a pickup bed full of ash limbs and logs from a recent EAB takedown, so was able to...

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

[SeanKroll] [You can fit some mini-skids in the chip-bed making it a one-rig show, dump before heading home (getchipdrop.com).] The mini will make you so much easier money than guys trying to do machine-work. The guys won't be broken down by the manual work. You will need less, better guys. Mini...

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

Mini-skid purchase is in the late year 1/early year 2 schedule of the plan, as I'll need another truck to tow it and the dump trailer it will ride on (especially if I get the larger chipper). Thankfully starting later in life and have got more sense about me in considering options and...

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

"Slightly better than sketchy", to start. I thankfully have some guys around my age who are helping out in the early stages, so they are more understanding/receptive to my instructions/guidance on using the equipment. As I've seen you raise in other threads, the labor situation is one of the...

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

He did; it was almost 3 yrs ago when he got his M15RX (which is the upper end model I'm debating, if I want to bite off that big a monthly payment). I see his points on it's benefits, but I also appreciate the comments/common sense provided here. I'll be demoing the 3 later this week, and will...

Posting to keep relevant. Also, has anybody had experience w/the Morbark Chip Safe feature? Good/bad/whatever? Thanks again.

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

Thanks for those nuggets of wisdom Merle; will have to put the skewer to the dealer to see if that can be done.

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

That would be nice on the bigger engines, but that adds another $8-$12K to the price, which then starts getting my payments out of whack. Plus, seeing how it's only in the 12" series, if I want a motor that big, move up to the 15" or 18" series and really let it rip!

Chipper engine choice: Gas or Diesel?

So, in my quest to get back in the game, my local Morbark dealer is offering me 2 engine options on the 1415/M12R: a 74HP Perkins 854 diesel or a 145HP 4.3L GM gas. All my experience w/chippers has been with gas models, but in learning more about diesels, am I correct to think I'll get the same...
