Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

I don't know if this will help anybody or not but here goes . You want to aim the corner of the bevel file where the small side meets the wide side of the file directly into the working corner of the chain .For those who don't know that term it is where the top plate and side plate meet . You...

That wasn't the one I saw over at another members house a few weeks ago and it certainly wasn't 200 bucks either . I'm thinkin around 50 or so .It had the guides kind of like that one though . Let me look though my pictures .I think I have how to hold the angle of the dangle some where on that...

Oh ,it's faster allright,no doubt about that . The short side is the fact takes longer . For me at least a 20" loop of round takes about 5 minutes to touch up while still on the saw . The same in square is 20 minutes in a vice . From what I gather most west coast fallers just carry extra...

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

Since this thread has started I did learn a few valuable lessons . The biggest so far is to watch the "beaks" which in reality is a miss alignment of the side and top plates . Those long pointy things might look real aggresive but they hinder the chains ability to cut correctly . Madsens site...

Well, the both of you are about to get some more as soon as I make them . I have the 22 mm Stihl flywheel puller perfected and will be working on a universal seal puller as soon as I find the time . If I could find something with 26 mm threads I'd make the larger pullers but as of yet haven't...

Both but it's easier to judge where the file is cutting going into the tooth ,at least for me . If you do it just right the side plate portion of the cutter and working corner will finish at the same time . On a regular round filed chain I can go righty lefty over the top but I've yet to...

I don't know if this will show anything you can make sense of or not .

A double bevel Pferd . It's all in how you angle the file .Once you figure it out it's simple .Believe me I struggled for a long time then it came to me like a flash from the blue . You have to hold some rather odd angles . I'll try and get some pictures in a next couple of days .

I didn't do that chain ,it was a picture taken from post # 77 of this thread . The ones I did are # 72 Oregon without the ramped anti kick backs . I only borrowed that picture to point out the working corner which was nicely done on that praticular chain . That right there is what makes it...

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

I did about 3-4 race chains so far this weekend the way an expert filer from the other side of Ohio showed me . If you hold the bevel file so the long part is on the top plate and the short part is on the side plate ,aim the bevel exactly towards the working corner .It should come out about...

There was one of those type guides at the Ohio GTG last Sat .The guys that had tried them out didn't really like them . I did learn some stuff from talking to some really good filers though .My race chains are actually done "old school " very aggressive and cut to beat hell ---on a reed valver...

Well ,I'm not Stumper but I've never acid dipped a file in my life .I've heard of soaking them in vineger though to get the same results as muratic ,never tried it myself . I usually just knock the chips out every so often ,when the file dies I get another one . I think I have 4 double bevel...

That statement right there sums it up .It doesn't make any diff from a race chain to a half inch chipper on a geardrive ,you have to be able to see what you are doing . A dimly lit garage is not the answer . I can get better results on top of a stump in the woods in natural sunlight than...

Sharpening: part 2, square chisel chain.

There is often a misconception when talking square ground .There is the factory version and the modified round to square . With either there are about three angles to consider .Madsons web site can show it in more detail than I can explain it . As for myself I only own one factory square...
