    Drying eucalyptus

Related to what I posted about guitar wood, apparently wood for instruments can be torrefied. I think it removes some oils. The process uses heat but it's also in a chamber where oxygen is removed. Not sure how that would work for wood used to turn on a lathe.

    Drying eucalyptus

Related to wood harvesting or curing, I've been watching a lot of Luthiers on Youtube the past few month. It's interesting to hear about different woods, how they grade them, store them, even age them sometimes beyond the storage of whomever they purchased from. I hope to purchase a redwood top...

What's the weather like in your neck of the woods?

Glad the 100 to 114 degree week went by the way side. Our air conditioner works good though. Humidity was higher than usual right after for a few days. Sometimes how cool summer mornings are means more to me than the afternoon temps. When it's cool at night, the afternoon heat feels short.

    The Official Happy Birthday thread!!!

Thank you. Spent a relaxed and mellow birthday after a short 3 hours removing several Phitzer junipers. But was done and into air conditioning by 11:30am. Went out to have Sushi for a birthday meal. Then reclined at home Anyhow, health feels good, and looking forward to another steady year.

    Zubat pole saw "hook"?

I don't use a Silky pole saw, but have a fiberglass set with hook. The hook as a primary hook to pull with a small secondary to push. For trees like honey locust that snag on themselves, I pull limbs free. For other if the limb does not fall clean, then it can get pushed with the smaller hook.

Springboards -- these DYI or standard design ??

The split in the end has me wondering if there's a purpose, Somewhat like the end of a prybar. Could this be a springboard and tool combo?

Springboards -- these DYI or standard design ??

Just acquired two springboards and I know near zilch about boards in general. Do these look like a commercially produced product or DYI? Anyone know what the end pieces are called - the nomenclature? The two pieces look so similar, it would be a fairly talented DYI build if that's the case. I...

Holy chit, remember those insanely vicious giant asian hornets Jay told us about?

It's not revenge. A few stings are less than they deserve for assault, arson, theft. One hive puts nobody in the grave, but disperses a spanking from nature.

Holy chit, remember those insanely vicious giant asian hornets Jay told us about?

Would love to release a hive of these hornets amidst some groups of these mobs burning up dealerships and businesses in various cities.

    Coast Redwoods 2018

At first glance, the four Euros can look even smaller with the redwood coast dwellers standing forward more. Looking back a few years, from Humboldt Redwoods state park.

Landscape Garden Design and Ornamental Plant Choices

Packed 1/4 inch minus gravel with the front half inch of the top block overlapping the back of lower blocks. Used them for the 7 years we lived there and they never budged.

That would work too. As an extra note - this was the first time I offset wall blocks like this, to use them as steps, and not just to retain soil.

Landscape Garden Design and Ornamental Plant Choices

At our last home, we opted for a circular paver block patio kit. Here's a before and after photo of part of the back yard, from one week to a week following.

Landscape Garden Design and Ornamental Plant Choices

Depends on where in California. It would probably work most anywhere in northern California near the coastal area, and other pockets. One advantage of that style of garden is that if some various seeds germinate, weeding can be spaced out by weeks because the density cloaks extra stuff. In...

Landscape Garden Design and Ornamental Plant Choices

That's interesting. Over here in Oregon, another, "Butterfly Bush" is on invasive lists, although in 40 years of horticulture, I don't recall a single seedling in landscape or forests. In contrast, I see Japanese maples seedlings continually in landscape beds, but those are not on the invasive list.

Landscape Garden Design and Ornamental Plant Choices

That sounds like how my mom landscaped when we moved to Beaverton in the 1960s, if I'm understanding your post. If sword ferns and Douglas fir germinated, or vine maple, she would save or transplant, some for the wooded area. Although, she did get a few imports from nurseries, or divisions from...

Landscape Garden Design and Ornamental Plant Choices

From one point of view, maybe, but otherwise it can make sense if people think about what's there. The Chitalpa tree blooms all summer. When it goes dormant and loses leaves, the evergreen Japanese holly retain foliage. When the day lilies die back in winter, the winter blooming Camellia...

Landscape Garden Design and Ornamental Plant Choices

If it loads, here's a video for our home front yard landscape. I plan to post later in the "gardening" thread which seems to be mostly vegetables and food. We're also doing stuff with corn, zuchini, etc., in a back garden arrangement. Our front yard, when bought 2016, had one big declining...
