How do you keep your 7018 dry? My neighbor had a 50# tin he opened and just left exposed. One would think you could just bake it in an oven for a couple hours but I read how hot and how long it takes to dry it-very hot and for a long time.
My uncle had a guy that used to weld and do repairs...
Brazing used to be popular for cast iron. My bud told me his dad brazed bull gear teeth in a tractor. Filed them down to match. I wouldn't think they would hold up, but I guess they did. I have brazed up steel hydraulic lines several times. Still holding after many years. Nickle rod works...
Well, I didn't have to. My GF threw a surprise 70th birthday party. My old bud had seen my antique helmet with the new headgear I had just put on it and was laughing at it. I really don't struggle too much with it, but I have run an auto helmet and it is a big improvement. My MO has been...
I don't have much patience for teaching also. I did watch my friend struggle to weld and told and showed him what he needed to do better. He told me I should be a welding teacher. Ha.
Stick is worth learning. Keep watching C.L. and Marketplace for a good cheap AC DC machine, or just an AC. Cheap and you can do heavy stuff.
It takes a bit longer to learn than mig. Vids will be a good tool. And the peanut gallery critiquing you will help also. Welding is fun. Funny how...
We had one in our shop when I was a kid. Been used hard and jaws were worn on ends. Ended up with 2 giant vices. Open up 10 inches with 6 inch jaws.
My son told me he really missed those. He has a pretty heavy duty one but nowhere near as big.
I have one too. Went to an auction and they had burned a work bench in the road ditch I crossed to get to my truck. They had burned the vice too. I wondered if it was still any good. About 30 years ago. Not very big and I don't use it hard. Can't believe they would burn it.
Make sure you don't breathe any fumes from stainless. Got a livestock fan? I think it is the chromium that is bad. Not that any fumes are good.
My mechanic bud in town welds up stock cheap stainless exhaust with regular steel wire feed. Seems to work fine.
My neighbor/friend had a forge and was quite talented making decorative and useful items. Very sad he drowned in the Niagara River. An old Italian taught him. Very artistic.
