I go for a shallow vertical face on valuable timber. 80% of the diameter across the face (if needed) not 1/3 of the tree depth. Very often can just shave the root flare - I try never to go deeper than the first cut the mill might take to "skin" the log.
That's a pretty spot, @SeanKroll. M and I camped there for several days a few years ago, enjoyed some very nice hikes.

Went and looked at some trees needing cut (pretty good sized job) and some machines for sale. Small walkabout in gorgeous weather, good for the soul, didn't realize that was what I needed. Took some pretty pictures.
