Welcome to the international IUFRO conference, Wind & Trees, 2011.

Objectives & Scope
Wind, in both chronic and episodic effects, shapes trees and forests in a multitude of ways, ranging from influences on moisture balance and physiology, to root, trunk and crown form, to stand and landscape-scale patterns of damage and recovery. As more demands are placed on trees and forests for production of extractive resources as well as preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, as well as aesthetic and recreational use, it becomes increasingly important to understand and manage (both before, during and after) wind events in forests. Wind & Trees is a series of quadrennial meetings by researchers from diverse disciplines who gather to share findings and ideas relevant to the study of interactions of wind with trees and forests. These meetings are organized under the auspices of IUFRO section 8.01.11. Moreover, growing recognition of the importance of urban, residential and agency trees and their value encourages a broadening of the scope of Wind & Trees to embrace these areas of study as well.

Programme & Field trip
The conference will officially begin on the morning of Monday, 1 August, and run through Thursday, 4 August, 2011. We expect that most attendees will wish to arrive Sunday evening. A 1-day field trip to regional sites of interest to this group will occur on Wednesday, 3 August. Field trip costs will be approximately US$75.

Welcoming reception
Arrival at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education will occur during the evening of Sunday, 31 July. Attendees are invited to join in an informal reception with hors de uvres from 18.00 until 21.30, in the lobby of the Center for Continuing Education

Registration
Registration will be managed by the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, using their online registration procedure. Payment can be via credit card, or international wire transfer. The online registration will be available in March.

Venue & Accommodation
The conference will take place within the meeting rooms of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, the University's on-campus hotel and conference center. A block of rooms has been reserved for Wind & Trees participants within the Georgia Center for Continuing Education hotel (same building). A full-service restaurant, buffet restaurant, and coffee shop are located within the center, and other restaurants are nearby.

Accompanying persons
Because this is a small conference without major sources of funding to underwrite costs, we do not have separate activities or programs for spouses, children, etc. We encourage accompanying persons to take advantage of the Georgia Center location in the midst of the city of Athens and the campus of University of Georgia. Shuttles to and from the Atlanta airport arrive and depart regularly at the Georgia Center. Both campus and city bus systems have frequent stops at the Georgia Center, providing easy transport to dozens of locations around campus and throughout the city.

Insurance
Attendees should carry their own insurance, because neither the conference, conference organizers, nor University of Georgia cannot assume responsibility for loss, damage, injury or other expenses.

Do you need a visa?
Attendees who require a letter of invitation in order to get a visa should contact the conference organizers. Letters of invitation will be contingent on registration and acceptance of a paper for oral presentation or poster presentation; or participants should submit an official inquiry from their scientific institution asking for a letter of recommendation.

Schedule & Length of presentations
Sessions will begin at 8.30 each morning, and go until 12.00, when there will be a 1 hour break for lunch. Afternoon sessions will commence at 13.00 and continue until 16.30. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday will be indoor sessions; Wednesday will consist of the field trip. We anticipate that each speaker will have 30 minute for BOTH presentation and questions. Posters will be exhibited in the foyer outside of the meeting rooms, and will be up for one morning or afternoon.

Costs:
Costs are still approximate. Registration will be approximately US$300. Rooms will be US$89/night for a single bed room, and US$109/night for 2-bed room. Field trip costs will be approximately US$75. When the Georgia Center website becomes operational in March, meeting registration and room costs can be paid through that online site.

That sounds like a in depth conference. The price seems reasonable too. I mean you have hors de uvres. Sounds like a real fine show. Let me know when you are in the PNW with a conference like that.

Well since they are international and only meet every...4?..years, it may be a wait. definitely a scientist kind of thing but they are open to hearing from arbs, or so they say.
