Colorado ice climber and author.

FYI
Craig was the known master of a style of climbing called off width.
He saught out the uber wide steep cracks that strike fear in the heart of most sane rock climbers.Off width climbing , could be compared to climbing a massive dead vine choked cottonwood.Since the crack is perhaps 8 inchs wide you can get yer feet in it and your arms up to your elbows , and gravel upward with no pretection.
Check he even co authored a book on it.

I heard about this on the radio this am. Apparently no clear mistake was made. Just bad luck. :(

Climbing ice is rife with objective hazards, even the best aren't immune. According to the news article, the hazard was something kind of specific to the North Cascades.

I always hated off-width cracks, especially the ones that taper down and squeeze you onto the face as you go up.

Rest in peace Craig.

what he was doing when the accident happened.

Pay attention, my friend. :drink:
