Exploding Bamboo!!

Bamboo scaffolding is so cool!!! Gary, how expensive was the bamboo that you got? And where did you get it from?

I think it was about $100 for a 4-pack. I got four different varieties...3 of the 4 starter plants survived...Moso, Robert Young and Nigra (black bamboo).

They were shipped in a UPS box about 30" high and 6"x6" square...skinny little things. That was 1998. My Moso is now really awesome. I bought them from Lewis Bamboo in Alabama.

Poke around through these pictures and you can see where we cooked in some of the Moso in November last year...we had a Veteran's Day get together at my bamboo grove. Cooked IN it, cooked WITH it (good quick fire source), used it for a Memorial display and just enjoyed being around it.

And that is one of THE coolest pictures of bamboo scaffolding I have seen. I saw it being used in person when I was in Burma in 1995...but only two stories up. That picture is awesome!

I like burning it because the pressure builds behind the nodules and then, kapow! Instant firecracker effect!

We had a dump trailer load of cane in the middle of our pile one time. We set it on fire one evening late. The cops showed up at our burn pile about an hour later wanting to know who was shooting automatics. I guess the neighbors about a half mile away called them. It wasn't long that they got to see some of it first hand. They kinda got a kick out of it after it was proven that we wasn't shooting.

I am uploading a short video of a bamboo burn I did at our boo pile about 5 years ago. The fire department showed up at my site...someone had called in a lot of noise and they could see smoke. I was surprised the cops the didn't show up...it does sound like a firefight. Big pieces can sound like a grenade. I have seen fire, coals, etc. blown 15-20 feet away from fire...it can get dangerous. I"ll post up the video in a bit.

Here's a super short one...4 seconds....the longer one still has 30 min. of upload time...and it's only a 1 minute 30 second video. Uploading is SLOW

Here's the longer version...it burns very fast and very hot. I have had 30 foot flames from that pile before. It is our burn pile for limbs at the folks' house and for the bamboo I harvest and trim.

Not a clue. I just ran it on my computer from YouTube and then also on my cell phone. The longer one and it works fine. I'll check it tomorrow afternoon maybe. Have to get up early and go test our new dive team sonar in the morning

You got me curious...I just copied the embed again...it's below. And I'll go back and replace it with this one. See if it makes a difference.

Just figured it out. I had it set as private which was unintentional. I'll fix that when I get back to a real computer.
