So i was just now sitting in the recliner letting my mind wander, and looked over to see a saw chain reference guide that came with my ripping chain. On it i saw a picture of a spool of chain. I sez to myself " I wonder what it would be like grinding away at wood with a whole spool". Then I realized theoretically you could wind a spool of chain on a sturdy hub and build your own planer or jointed of whatever size you want, and it otta be cheaper and sharpenable. Cheap way to get a helical head for sure, but would it produce a polished finish like a normal helical head?

how would you sharpen it? Seems like the finish of the wood would suck.

Maybe by unwinding the spool if it can be built in a way such that it will hold tight on the spool while still being unwindable.

Unless you find the rough sawn look desirable, which I do -- I much prefer rustic & satin to smooth-n-glossy.

Would we understand it if he told us?

Just having fun, Jomo's opinion is welcomed
