Has anyone here tried a metal detector for finding metal in trees before cutting? If they can penetrate ground they ought to go through a tree too. I don't know how deep in one could detect, but a few sweeps should pinpoint the location, size, and shape if metal in a tree.

If I remember I'll try it sometime when I find my detector.

They say that's good for a couple inches. Nice to check a board but a little short for a tree.

Agreed I have seen some utility models that go something like 30' deep. But $1000 and up. From what I know about them depth depends on what is being detected like a chunk of gold or an energized line or a gas pipe. The bigger the target the deep they will find it.
