I am inspired by Jerry B's fine thread sharing his Mendocino Coast pictures with us, to do something that's been at the back of my mind for a bit. A couple of years ago M and I spent a month in SW Utah, camping and hiking. Most of you will recall that trip, as well as others to Utah and other areas of the region. Those others I have done a pretty good job of documenting here, but...

When we got back from that trip, I put up some pictures from Capital Reef NP, but then got waylaid by life in all it's complications and never shared pictures from Zion, Bryce, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and some other places we visited.

So I'm going to turn the calendar back a bit and post some now.

This first batch is from Zion NP, the main canyon on the N. Fork of the Virgin River.

This set is from the Kolob Canyon section of the park, off to the north of the Virgin. We thought this was stunning scenery...if there were no Zion NP, there should be a Kolob Canyon NP :).

Mix of snow, rain, and sun this day...the light was always changing and the pictures reflect that.

Back in the main canyon, this is a hike up Hidden Valley. Almost 2000' of elevation gain, iirc. One segment of bench trail offers handhold by way of chain bolted into the cliff edge. The exposure was pretty extreme :).

Last ones from Zion...these are along the Zion-Mt Carmel highway, leaving the park headed east.

some many routes......so little time. looks like great climbing!

That's beautiful, Burnam. Thanks for posting.

Oh, I want to go back. I can't believe it was 2012 when we were in Zion. Stayed in Springdale, I think. Right next to the park, anyway. Spent a week there. Not enough time, really, to see it all. Got to spend a few months at least. There's so many nooks and crannies to explore. Love it.

Thanks, all.

This is Red Canyon, a US Forest Service site on the Dixie NF. Great campground well under an hour from Bryce NP, which has uninspiring campgrounds, imo. We got snow overnight, 6 inches and 20 degrees. Good outdoor gear rules :D. We drove up to Bryce, less snow up there for whatever reason...spent much of the day in the lodge, eating from the very nice lunch buffet, drinking warm drinks. I think I have some lodge pictures to go with the Bryce set.

Bryce Canyon...on many folks bucket list and with good reason. Bizarre and beautiful by turns.

Here's some of the old lodge where we spent a pleasant snowy day indoors. They serve a fine lunch buffet, and pour an even better coffee nudge :).

And a couple of the same age cabins that are available for rent. Lodge and cabins are right at the rim. Nice digs. Built by Union Pacific Railroad Company, to encourage tourism use of the new intercontinental rail line service, if memory serves. Early 1900's, before it became a National Park.

Those wavy roof lines you see on the cabins are true...that's work from back in the days when craftsmen took the time and effort to build things special and unique.

The fellow that Bryce is named after, Ebenezer Bryce, was a rancher from way back. I love the quote attributed to him, describing Bryce Canyon..."It's a hell of a place to lose a cow." He is most assuredly right in that.
:D

These are pics from the rim.

M and I did a good long dayhike down into the canyon from the rim, a bit short of 8 miles. It might be even more incredible from below, getting up close to all that structure. Try these...

Camping out in the snow? Wow!!!

Interesting that you don't have any problem with the pic's orientation.

My laptop never has. It seems the orientation issues are with posting from smartphones, are they not?

Yeah, pretty much. I was hoping the forum update would maybe fix it, but all that did was wipe out the unread posts function.

I'm still getting used to that.

Thanks, Jerry. Next up will be Grand Staircase-Escalate. Fine slot canyons.

Grand Staircase-Escalate NM. Coyote and Spooky Canyons.

These places are kinda off the beaten path, not the best of roads to get to the trailheads. Not many other visitors, which was a huge relief after Zion and Bryce. Perfect for us.
