Vermeer parts question

I now have a BC935 chipper that is doing a good job for us.

Recently the battery was dead. I had the auto parts store check it...battery checks good. Their test eqpt says the voltage regulator is bad (diodes checked good per their machine).

Chipper has a Deutz engine...have to get V.Reg from them. It is apparently built into the "blower" which is also the alternator.

The W.W.Williams parts guy that handles Deutz down here said they can get the Volt Reg...it is $212 (comes from Cologne, Germany). I figured a V Reg would be MAYBE $40-50...

If I decide to replace the alternator/blower assy that is $692. I called "Diesel Specialists" who sell Deutz parts "direct"...they have to get it from Germany, too...their price is $245.

I am wondering if I might be able to take out the blower and take it to a decent shop and have them match a V. Reg (generic) for a lot less than $212.

Is that realistic? Anybody had to deal with this type Vermeer/Deutz issue?
 
Sorry Gary I'm unfamiliar with this engine and what you/they mean by the alternator being the 'blower'. Is it not a normal looking alternator run off of a belt? Or some other type of animal? Seems really expensive to me.
 
Gary I would try removing the alternator and seeing if you can cross-reference. I was referring to the $692 as seeming outrageous. $212 for the regulator components only vs $245 for a bolt in new alternator complete would make the complete unit a no-brainer imo.
 
Before I trusted the machine at the parts store I would test the output with a multimeter.

If the thing charges but the diode is bad and lets the battery drain when the key is off, a switch or an inline diode might solve it for cheaper.

Apparently the engine is oil cooled and there is a blower at top center of engine...I think it must pull air through the area where the oil cooling baffles are...the alternator is behind that blower. I'll probably have to take it apart to get a good look at it.

It is not the configuration I usually see for an alternator. In my experience, the alternator is normally mounted on the side of the engine and visible/accessible pretty easily. This alternator is part of an assembly it seems.

I'll get pictures eventually.

The good news is I tracked down a local outfit that may have the alternator with volt regulator for $200...more what I expected. It is rated at 14V...got to see if that is a problem.

Good info, Jim. I am going to get it checked again before I make a definite replacement happen.

I found out it is a Deutz type 1011 motor...3 cylinder diesel.
 
14 volts is fine. Whats the amp rating?

Deutz is air cooled. They do use an oil cooler, and a large one at that. It will obviously be an air to air set up. Air cooled diesels are hard on oil, as they do depend more on oil to cool than a water cooled engine.

Be VERY careful with that blower Gary when you take it apart. These engines move a lot of air to cool, and the taken into the air stream will polish that fan to the point that it will cut paper. Maybe not the case for you, some designs are different, but they can be sharp.

First I'd check the service manual for troubleshooting, if not, I'd turn engine off, disconnect battery positive, touch the lead to the battery, check if it sparks, indicating current draw, reconnect positive, follow the wire back, most likely alternator/regulator, disconnect, and check if there is a spark, indicating current draw, if not, hate to say it follow wires back doing the same to each electrical item to find what is doing the current drain.

Thanks, Jim, for the sharp parts warning...never would have thought about them possible being dangerous but I can see that happening. (BTW...the picture you tried to load did not come through...I see the img tags but no picture)
