been in business for just over 2 years now and am getting to the point where I need a full-time ground man...not just my stepdad/cousin/wife/buddy looking for work...I have a friend in the industry with another tree service and we've talked about making a go at it together. how to value what you've built and bring someone on your team?

-sole proprietor llc
-have enough equip but could use more/bigger
-want to make it 50/50
-buddy has isa cert but no climb

p.s. my wife is pretty dang good running ropes

What does he bring to the table to make him partners with you? He will need to "buy in."

Working with friends can seriously suck.

Yep.
incorporate.
He would probably fall under the employee category, not a subcontractor. Stubs use their own equipment and work without supervision. Don't get retroactively bit in the butt for workers comp.

Man, you are a negative bunch.
I have kept up a good partnership with my friend Richard for about 8 years now.
Never a harsh word between us in that time.

That is a testament to both your characters, Stig. I was partnered with a guy for about a year in roofing. We got along fine, but any time "we" needed something for the business, "he" had no money. It takes a willingness on both sides to overlook the shortcomings of the other.

He's a cert arborist with a degree in horticulture and a pesticide applicators license work I normally pass on. experienced ground man and he will be bringing money to the table. Just wondering how much to ask and for what percent. Right now I'm at 15k for truck Vermeer and saws. I like the idea of 51/49. Will pay ourselves 15/hr with hopefully a hefty Xmas bonus.

With Richard and me, there is no "we" or "he" when it comes to money.
We both own 50% of the company, and we both get paid by the company according to the hours we put in.
Anything else stays in the company and gets invested in tools and machinery.
So when we need something for the business, we simply buy it, if there is enough money in the bank account.
Since we are usually in agreement about what we need to buy ( Such as a trip to California to climb redwoods!) that works great.
Socialism at it's best:lol:
