It sure can be...when it isn't giving you a bad case of the heebee jeebees :D. Maybe the fun is the mostest after you have survived the heebee jeebees and the drop is a full-on success....might be so ;).

Indeed. And even a fall from what might normally be a sub-fatal height, on to a fence like that could spell the be-all end. It's a very low probability event...just something the self-preservation part of our brains might dwell on.

Oh yessir, it is all those things. The scary part comes from the unwanted mental picture of falling from my perch above onto such a structure. It has happened before, at least once that I'm aware of.

@Bodean, you'd actually put the biner in the ring itself, and run the rope in it. It would be a sort of odd way to take the whole "ring for the rope" idea out of the product...but you'd only do this for negative rigging on a standing stem when the pinch issue you described might be in play...

You also might try adding hefty steel rigging carabiner to the ring for the rope to run in, in that situation...that arrangement likely would stand somewhat proud from the trunk and allow an unimpeded run. Similar to adding a biner to the big ring on an adjustable friction saver to ease...

Here on this part of the Mt. Hood NF, we didn't have a great deal of trouble with deer browse for the most part. Some low elevation Douglas fir planting units needed protection, and what we usually used was Vexar tubing. Labor intensive, must be done to exacting specs, and stout staking is...

One would have to exercise a lot of care and caution in using that for life support. I can easily see it as a secondary TIP, but as a primary one I'd be a bit sketched with it. Probably no real good reason, just the open hook aspect of it seems...questionable? I dunno, might need to sit with...

For long boring cuts like that, you need to start way back from the hinge. Start with the belly of the saw to the rear, then flip it over to bring the cut forward to where you want the back of the hinge to be. Keeping a long bore level is hard. You might try practicing on some stumps before...
