So many pretty views there the other day. I was very much enjoying the poison-oak vine colors. This is the first couple minutes into Mattole Rd.. Bet you've been around this corner a hundred times.

Went to the Avenue of the Giants yesterday. The light and fog was better than hoped for in the morning. Enjoyed the poison-oak showing autumn color up the trunks. I may try this as a 16 x 32 inch print canvas.

I have a laser, but it's fairly useless for a hedge like the one shown above that needs to somewhat follow a grade that drops and rises.

Don't think I shared this one yet, unless I missed flipping a page when checking. It reminds me of a picture window view.

Lovely shots and scenery. Especially enjoy those vantage point compositions. Is there snow there already in spots?

Thank you! I had forgotten. It seemed that maybe you had included a photo in one of your books of the photos you took from the bend in that one road of the fir trunks. I seem to recall seeing them. I was thumbing through your Jedediah Smith book yesterday to see if I could spot them, but there's lots of photos. Here's something from a month or two ago. Its still really dusty, but regardless, this is my favorite time of day. This was near Howland Hill Rd..

Gerald !!! When we were near Jedediah Smith park, you were looking at or photographing some fir trees. True firs "Abies". Can you refresh my memory on what type of species of Abies grow around there? I was enjoying the bark on this one I saw the other week.

As you mentioned, that particular red ... sort of faded, facing shade seems difficult to get the color from. The greens on the sprouts are like the opposite to contend with.

It was rather dark to get a good photo under this tree, but it's still rather interesting. The bright green sprouts up on the trunk were very bright and cheery. Reminds me of an asparagus patch.

In much of the United States, grooms never look backward while waiting for the first look part of the ceremony when the bride approaches ... until they are given the green light to turn and face her, which is typically when the bride is closer than the space shown in the photo. Odds are most marriage planners would guess what stage of the ceremony that was, from seeing it happen weekly or monthly.

The "early morning" you mentioned sure helps on Howland Hill Rd. this time of year. Mid-day and sunny the dust really pops in the light. But early morning, the soft fog still does the trick.

I try to photograph when the sun isn't it's brightest yet, and tend to underexpose. Then brighten the entire image in lightroom and slide the highlights slider to decrease the highlights. So the Canon 5DS doesn't have dynamic range that's great, but I just underexpose by about 1 or 2 stops quite often. So far, I don't really like HDR. My 5DS can do it in camera. But I don't like it for forest. For cities and buildings sometimes. But I'd rather shoot one frame and work with it. My friend just got the Sony A7iii which is supposed to have great dynamic range. But I doubt I'd switch. It seems like great dynamic range isn't better than waiting for the best light in the forest. PS ... There's path beyond the bridge along walker rd. on the right side between the old burly trees. Not Simpson Reed .. but the other side of the bridge.

Thank you. Summer hasn't been a favorite time to take redwood photos for a few years, but I'm beginning to figure out some alterntative ideas for that season. Here's one from Jedediah. 200mm takes the eyes on a trip to inner space.

Our smallest dog Zozo, passed away today. About 6 weeks ago, she could barely walk and had high fever. Tests suggested liver infection or failure. It took weeks to deteriorate to that point, but medication recovered her to where she was sprite and peppy. But last night, she looked great at 10pm when my wife went to bed first. When I went to to bed around 1am, I noticed Zozo was almost limp. In only 3 hours she got that weak. Today her temperature soared. And we realized trying more medication would simply put her on a roller coaster of feeling okay then feeling like crap ongoing. Seeing her only quality of life gone ... which was mainly comfort ... our vet agreed to take her after closing to put her to sleep. I feel sad, but not bad. She was the best dog of all we've ever had. But we have a new Rat Terrier that's a pretty good addition to the family. We were going to rule-out small breeds in the future, but decided to be open to it 10 or 15 years into the future when we're older. Zozo ashes will be placed near this coast redwood. The other photo is our son in law, holding Zoey within the past few weeks when they visited. Hands-down she was the best pet I've ever had. I don't plan to fill her shoes, and am thankful for the blessing of having her to take care of over those years.

A tree we encountered early June. A good example of near-zero taper in the coast redwoods. I call this one the "Nitro Express" after the .700 round made by Holland and Holland.

Several of the champion size Port Orford cedars have dead tops. It's not disease related. It gives character, just like how Elk antlers. Dead bone tissue that develops, and falls repeatedly.

It's lasted this long without your pruning. And it will probably outlive your family's next generation or two, if not more.

We found a Port Orford cedar yesterday that's not a champion, but may be the 2nd tallest. I found articles noting one 248 feet and an old 1968 nomination at American Forests much fatter and 242 feet. But conifers.org is usually up to speed, and lists 238 feet as 2nd tallest known. The tallest is the 266 footer we found in Jedediah Smith park, 2009 Had I realized the tree we saw yesterday may be 2nd tallest, I would have taken more photos and measured an extra 20 minutes to pin-point the numbers. But our few laser increments and guesstimate to the lower reach are 240 ft. It's 7' to 8' diameter dbh. The lower trunk does not lean and and 80% or so of the trunk leans noticeably. The last several decades worth of stem growth straightened a "course correction". We didn't pick a name, but I was going to see what Chris thought of "Silver Medal" for a nickname. The natural range of this species is smaller than I remembered. Almost makes coast redwood's range seem huge by comparison.

Your post reflects a type of comment I often interject on Instagram. Every so many photos, some people like to add some form of wise saying, Muir quote, or their own "brilliant" insight. One being along the lines of "look what man has done" or "amazing these trees even remain after man swung the axe and saw" ... etc., etc. I tend to chime in with ''hmmm ... then you must really dislike how mother nature laid waste to 100 times more trees than men or women ever cut and logged" ... something alongg those lines.

Here's a variation of the one you have. The Curly Redwood Lodge motel has the same vertical print you have, in their lobby. This is one they chose to frame in one of the rooms.

Time to fix the rails on this thread !! I know the photo you mean, but first here's an experiment with her sister. It didn't turn out the way I expected, and I haven't shared this version before. For prints and canvas, I opted for two full outfits.
