Off topic post here ; does anyone know where I can get a copy of “Fundamentals of tree work” - iirc the author is a member here ... like to brush up on some basics and it seems like quite the comprehensive tome to say the least ...

Yeppers ! Jean-Simon owns a few world records last I checked ... I bought a pipe from him and it made quite a difference in cut times vs modded can - loud as hell though ... his technique is flawless and he cuts very, very quickly !

Good info ! Any reason you like the rakers (riders, stops) at .5mm or about .019 for us guys from USA not using metric system ? Most run the stock setting of .65mm or .026 ... only about 2 hair thickness variations but sometimes little things make BIG difference!

Some guys use a Husky (or homemade) deflector on the opposite side of stock outlet - if you are cutting where spark arrestors are mandatory this may be the ticket ... I use dual tubes welded into the front cover - with porting and intake work they seem to give a good bang for the buck and give the Saw a nice “throaty” tone without the noise becoming unbearable; though they ARE louder than stock for sure

Yah , expansion chambers do considerably more than direct the sound away from the operator - nice gains can be had if the whole system is operating in concert ... the megaphone (or horn as you refer to it) while not an expansion chamber Most definitely will improve performance in a given rpm range when the dimensions are correct ... they are also ear-blisteringly loud :big-bounce:

I do have a file to sharpen sqr/sqr chain ... however nothin cuts like silvey ground sqr/sqr chain - once the geometry is dead-nuts via the grinder I get a few touch ups with the file ... rinse and repeat ... my best option wood be to spend 1g on a simington grinder but I’m too cheep :)

The modifications, IF done properly, should allow the Saw to flow more air - more air / more torque = more powa ! The Saw should also run cooler than a stocker and service life should be similar all things being equal ... Providing you have the work , the Saw (and cost of mods - or just your time / labor if you possess the required skills to modify) should pay for itself rather quickly - I know mine did

... My pleasure Jonny - it was cool working with an experienced tree guy instead of these “jimmy crack-corner and I don’t care “ types that seem to gravitate to this work sometimes ... You were on time, professional, had some gear (loved those pulleys Saw-weet !) and most importantly the knowledge ... I’m glad you liked the 395xp ... definitely more power in there IF a guy wanted it ... seemed like you had a good sweat goin running her Buckin those 22” ash rounds ... I noodled em in half this morning and put a whooping on em with the isocore maul - No where near as quick as the super-split but hey it’s a heckuva workout ! Burned a good lb of lard off for sure:hello1: ... should be more comin down the pike from my end and if you ever need a hand feel free to gimme a jingle ...

Sawdust WILL kill a Saw no doubt ... Iím a big fan of the max-flow system for Stihl saws where applicable - cut all day without messing with filter ! Or run a 395xp ... that filtration system is da bomb !!!
