Nasty, bad tree, Kenny. Cripple it up and break it over. Not much else you could do, and feel safe, with that one, and it wasn't over with the fall. Bucking it down and getting those straps off was another ordeal I'll bet.

hmmm, "never cold start your engine" So pay the price to never cold start it is like getting a bunch of miles for less money than an engine replacement in the end. Sounds right, makes sense. Glad is a mild climate here.

I agree Butch. On the technical side the climber / faller has the call. But on mundane work sometimes you have to do it the way they tell you. Two sides to that one. probably more.

The steeper angle sometimes allows them to woller a pinch cut easier than a full cross cut pinch. Again, my approach when I was cutting for crane was 1 cut that gradually opened up or stayed the same and slowly loaded the boom. I think that’s the main thing to be able to read, is where to start the cut (of a properly rigged and pretensioned pick) so that it gracefully transfers the weight of the pick to the boom. I don’t micromanage them though. I’ve seen some neat V cuts and shelf cuts.

I’m for one cut, I mention it now and then but only occasionally insist on it. They do what they want mostly.

Drop Load Test! A real classic. Unfortunately video quality in those days wasn't so good, but the story line is rich and lives on. I think it would be a fine thing to re-do that stunt in Hi-def.

The madrone is a wide ranged tree. Whole west coast to 7000 feet. We have single trunk specimens to 5 feet dbh. Awesome co-dominants. Graeme MacMahon called them weeds. Always crooked, and always leaning for the light, but clean trees to work. No pitch. Nice. The wood is really hard with little fiber to bind a cut. So it cuts clean and fast even with a handsaw. Highest priced firewood in my parts. Smooth and slick especially when wet. If not a stub to hold a lanyard set a wrap or you'll slip and hit one of those nasty stubs. Oh, those stubs. The little ones cut you like a razor. Not at all like a conifer. Lot of limb walking, sometimes. I'm digging that electric saw, Reg. Nice and quiet! Nice vid. Thank you.

I'd loved to have written a more lengthy chapter about pruning, but the book would have been at least 100 more pages longer.

I took a couple years of Ag and Horticulture in school and learned some great things about pruning and training systems used in the industry for fruit, nut, grape and flower production. It's a genuine science that I was able to apply in my regular trimming as an arborist in the latter years. Any treeman who learns what pruning is about will become a much better treeman by it. Page 413 in the FGTW. Just a couple pages defining the distinctions between Trimming, Training and Pruning practices. I agree, Deva, skill and knowledge in pruning systems should be more recognized.
