Couldn't agree more. Our newish crane guys, bend more guide bars and just generally mess up because the stupid V-cut basically retards their development.

Stephen: You guys are weird. (You and Burnham.) Most of the rest of us absolutely suck at any conception of anything LIKE level. (If my observance of hundreds of new guys, and even lots of very experienced tree-service hands are any indication.) I became vastly improved, shortly before, and then greatly thereafter starting this thread. Burnham helped me very much indeed with the drizzle dripping off his full-brim hat at zip-fest. I still suck, but I've got super weird mental tricks now that are nigh on incommunicable. Frankie: Leave it to the freakin Krauts, eh?

Have you used it yet? Better than GPS or other nav methods? Don't really understand how that is an improvement over lat long coordinates, probably solves some problem I'm not clever enough to see.

Hopefully, he'll correct me if I'm wrong, but I wanna say that Mr. Gerrald F. Beranek himself had, at times, packed a small bubble-level out into the woods to place on the guide-bar, to see what was what. I could be wrong. Sean: Yeah. I suck at swinging leaners. I usually just cut em level, and calculate for how far the top is out of plumb. :|::|::|:

Yeah, thanks Burnham... I wanna start throwing up some pictures of us tree service guys trying to cut level stumps on the next cow face that we get. I would try to show the top of the stump with a bubble-level over it. It's unreal how hard of a time the brain has in attempting to conceive what true level is reletave to one's surroundings. Gotta be some kinda life lesson in there.

August: I readily admit that you are easily twice the tree guy that I am. I learned a ton from you and deeply admired a now ancient GoPro natural crotching vid that you did over the house in which you did gutsier stuff than I think that I would have done. I'm not blowin smoke when I say that I deeply admire you. However. Don't you feel that crane work is exceedingly boring... about like doing construction, or working in an assembly line in a fish cannery? I stinkin hate it compared to conventional work. We have a slightly bigger crane than yours, and I loathe the times when I'm sent out on the crane crew. Choke a piece, torch it off, choke a piece, torch it off. "What am I good for here Brian?"... "uhhh, yer good fer 2 grand." Choke two grand, torch it off. :banghead: Moreover, the videos are unwatchable for me. Do you like conventional work better?

Gay men are horrible at tree work. Then again... gay women are not so bad considering the phsical weakness of their gender... I dunno, Corey... I'm on the fence on this one. A "like" button might work. Super gay, granted, but it just might work. I'm crazy like that.

Cooll job Sean... more pics!! For my part, I hate the new little Echo, eve (as I do with all of my top-handles) with the muffler. Just not enough saw imho. Now the 355t I really like. I'm especially loving the t435 from Husq. Now,turning an oiler down?... That move I just can't get behind. Ever. For ANY reason. Period. Dumb, dumb, dumb, imho. Then again... it's been a really long time since I've had to work by myself. Good on ya mate!

Sean: "Do they get fired/consequences?"... Yeah freakin right... Dude, we would have like NO STINKIN ground guys if they so much as gave them a slap (ABUSE!!!) on the wrist... And you danger guys... come to freakin Washington man, I'm serious... you guys will make a KILLING. Man, we can't get guys to go up there... we can't even get guys to drag brush, because it's hard. Ahhh... well... we're a Wellfare State anyways... and I'm lazy like Mick... my hat's off to the millenials for even coming into work at all. Mick: "What they feel for you is something between contempt and pity."......... You are Keats, Byron, Shelly, Tennyson.... and David Bently Hart all rolled into one. Cory: You East Coasters have it made... come out west to the wellfare state and Sean and I will see what a bunch of stellar employees you'll find to help you with your tree service. We need an emoji that laughs and crys at the same time. Ahhh... well... for that matter... no, I should probably just let it rest. God knows you've already had a taste of ONE of our PNW guys.

You??? Too nosy?................ Short answer... no.... we field folk are hourly, but.... you know... what's good fer the goose is good fer the gander... we just... our young men just really can't get it together... but there are probably WAAAAAY too many Millenial Hater threads out there, and I think we all realize that it's just not about that. I could talk for hours. If they feel sick, they don't come in. If they smash their finger... they don't come it. There is ALWAYS a car problem. There is ALWAYS a girlfriend problem. If they bruise their shin... they don't come in. If there is traffic... they are always late. Scratch that, they are always late anyways, but if there is traffic they are insanely late. They are hypochondriacs. They are valetudinarians. They are the most dreadful little pack of invalids you've ever even tried to imagine. They're idea of working hard is the most disgusting joke that an iron-stomached man could ever even dare to stick around to listen too. They make common decent fork like Sean and I look like the insanest bunch of lunatic cowboys that could ever be imagined.

August: Pretty rad vid. I notice that you're allways askig Damien, "Are you SURE you're all the way cut through." I notice that our Eastside Treeworks resident crane dude Jake Rodgers (WONDERFUL guy.) always uses insanely huge guide bars just to be able to get everything from one side. I'm allways giving him a hard time about it. I worked on his crew for a few months when I first came to Eastside, and I never really got it. Do you guys find that it is very much to always be able to torch everything from one side? I feel like it's fer guys who don't sharpen well.

You'll see. ;) Corey: No. Absolutely nothing like it. I had to go fall a fir for another foreman today... you can have no possible idea how completely backward his crew's SOP was to the way that I prefer to run mine. But due to the staffing exigencies that this new millenial generation continues to pose for my managers... I've got guys filtering through my crew like nobody's business. I can't keep anything running smooth for long. I could talk for a week on this and bore everyone to tears.

August: Thanks for the new vid. You are such a (loved the piano usage btw)... no... you are the undisputed videographic genius of our age, and my hat's off to ya. Pretty sure everyone around here would echo that sentiment. Second: There really does seem to be something rather transcendent in your work. Not just treeework or vidwork or what have you... ohh... let's just quit beating around the bush... as one brother in Christ to another... I can really feel your love of God coming through your videos. (I'm done, Corey. Honest.) What does God have to do with treework? Ohh... nothing. Just... EVERYTHING! But anyways. 3) What kind of a weird axe were you beating with? Looked like a Genuine Norlund. I got one of those. I pretty much hate it. Nice and heavy, but It sucks for splitting. 4) All PNW tree guys (Yes, all. I said "all," didn't I? So why would I have said all if I didn't mean ALL?) are extreme newcomers to the cranework world with reagard to our more Eastern (and evern Southernly :/:) brethren. So when a man who fought in the Vietnam War, and started killing pines when you and I were in diapers tells you that you might have been faster if you hadn't bothered with a second sling, maybe next time just say, "You know what?... Yer probably right." O.k.?.... Well... That was easy. 5) If you ever mention the name Sean Ruel again without fully acknowledging that he is MY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, my lawyers will take any last vestige of your tree service that you once held dear. I taught that poop-stain kid everyting he knows... except fer that stuper-munter or whatever he calls it. What moron would ever mess with all that mess anyways? Man... there's one apple that fell WAAAYYY far from the tree. My dear Sean... what have you DONE!!? 6) Dude, why do you use Heard Heads? Everybody knows they suck for stacking, don't they? Thanks.

  1. Oh.... Thanks then Steve. That was a bewildering weekend for me for other reasons. I apologize for spacing-out. Any chance you'll make it to Zip-fest? We plan to go.
  2. Nope, not me Jed. I met you at the get together at Indian Henry.
  3. Pete:

I grew up in the Midwest, (Minnesota, South Dakota) but we (my wife and nine-year-old daughter) live in the East Puget Sound area in Issaquah, WA--near Seattle. Cool place. Rains incessantly nine months of the year, but grows really beautiful, tall, straight-grained Firs.
  4. Idaho is great. Lots to do for someone who lives outside. Where abouts are you from Jed?
  5. Hey... does anyone out there ever have troubles with gunning sights giving inaccurate reads? What do you do? (Stihl MS 440, 32")
