We call this EC-4...endorsement category 4 for chainsaw use by climbers. This past week I facilitated yet another of these coveted training opportunities for FS tree climbers.

Nothing special to members here, just a week of some classroom and mostly hands on experience in learning the ropes, gear and techniques.

I do get rave reviews from most of the students...fun for them, they learn a ton and aside from a bit of stress, fun for me, too.

A few pics.

OK, some bright guy can now tell me why the pictures don't post in the order i uploaded them...damn it.

I thought someone mentioned earlier that you could hit "Preview", and then drag and drop the pics into whichever order you want them?

Some success in edit mode...still not quite getting how it works...or it is intermittent in how it does work. But I got 'em arranged a bit better.

Hey Burnham, I overheard some of the USDA guys talking about getting more climbers for the ALB project here in Boston. If I overheard correctly the only place they can go to get certified/qualified is Oregon? Seemed kinda odd to me. I had to resist the urge to ask 'em if they new ya....;)

Couldn't only be from Oregon, Greg. They've been using climbers from the Smokejumper bases since the ALB first showed up in Chicago and NY...bases in CA, WA, ID, MT, as well as OR. other FS climbers as well, but the bulk have been jumpers.

It may be true that finding qualified climbers who are able or willing to take a 6 week detail is difficult from elsewhere that out west...but certainly not limited to Oregon alone.

I know for a fact that there are plenty of jumpers in several bases who'd be happy to get a detail to Whoosta. Some at this workshop were recently back, and a bunch had done earlier details.

We have had several climbers/instructors from APHIS at the last two years' workshops at Dorena...some may recall my name :).

It is true that the flagship training venue for USFS tree climbers and instructors is indeed in Cottage Grove, OR...at the Dorena Genetic Resource Center. While it used to be Region 6 (Oregon and Washington) in scope, over the last 10 years, since the R6 climbing program was adopted as the model for nation-wide training and certification of FS climbers, the Dorena workshop has assumed national prominence. No other Region can offer the years of experience and the depth of expertise that R6 does.

Of course, you have to assume that all this is due solely to my active participation as instructor and facilitator, technical advisor and regional program manager.

:lol::lol::lol:

Right, Boston...maybe there is a problem getting climbers who want to go THERE!
:D

Of course they were, Squishie, all of them ...and a couple did get a bit of a ride, but nothing too bad, really. A pretty good bunch, and of course they got input on how many wraps to take ;).

Pity I can't see all the pics, my dial-up gives up after about six or seven!
Looks like a lot of fun, and nice to see what others are doing.

Training is fun when you get paid for it.

It looks like you've got a sweet gig Mr. Burnham... and results speak for themselves.

Does look like a good time Burnham!

I had good luck organizing pics by holding it where you want it for a second before dropping it

Awesome Photos!!! I still need to get my red card and S 212 cert. Its hard just watching my coworkers run saws while I can only swamp for them...I have more experience running saws than most of them too. Not really:X just frustrating.:) I'm pretty sure I'll get my certs next spring though.8) Do you teach S 212, Burnham?

Cool pics Burnham.

Pretty close in the pronunciation too. If you are from around Worcester, it's Wistah. They have wicked accents.

I used to work for the government as a hotshot and as a heli-rappeler. Now I go home at night.
