minor wrestling news

Do you have a favourite wrestler from each decade? In the UK wrestling's heyday was in the 70's. Giant haystacks was a celebrity then. It was a sport more akin to cabaret than anything else.

hmm, I was really only a fan in the mid to late 80's. I liked many of the teams, usually the heels vs the good guys. Nikita Koloff, The Road warriors, 4 horsemen, ha, too many to name, I will admit that Vince Mcmahon is a marketing genius.

:D I watch this with a memorial smirk to my youth.

Heystack Calhoun is what I know him as.

I liked Freddie Blassie.....he called everyone a "pencil necked geek"...quite the obscene showman.

Freddie's big thing was crushing beer cans against his forehead...remember? The steel in them was quite a bit thicker in those days. An interview never went by when he didn't do it. He'd say, "All you pencil necked geeks at home, do this!", then he'd flatten it. Everyone would try it. You could do it, but it hurt. My mother used to say, "You're going to hurt your brains".

I once had to pass Dick Murdock in a narrow aisle at a local drugstore here. I think he was buying bandages n stuff for his raw looking forehead. We went chest to chest, so I got a good look at it.

Another time I was gassing up and Jake the Snake and King Cobra were on the same pump, other side. They were in a big caddie. Jake was cool, King Cobra sat in the car. They were rasslin' in town that evening.

I was rounding the corner once at a match and Tony Atlas almost plowed into me, running from some girls. He was kinda tiny, right there in front of me - just real muscley. I remember thing "Damn, he ain't shit."

I used to go see all those fellows a lot, back in the good old days. I always sat over the bad guys entrance, that was the best spot. Everyone would be cursing then out and throwing shit. Fun stuff! I'd sneak a half pint of whiskey in and have a grand old time. You could still smoke in public places back then.

sweet, I was there, sorta, I was at the pacific coliseum, watching on PPV mega screen first time Hulkster slammed Andre. some deal! :)
tough to hear Hulkster had to call the meatwagon to get hisself out of his bed today....

awesome, 93,170 in attendance at the Silverdome, WWF haydey for sure. :D

I remember that Haystack's patented move was called 'the big splash'....you waited because you knew it was coming. A full frontal jump bellyflop on the poor sucker lying face up on the mat...all that tonage. If he didn't pull his weight somehow, it could break all your ribs. In any event, it usually ended the match, unless the guy rolled out of the way.

This thread made me google 3 big old school wrestlers: Haystack Calhoun (great name), Gorilla Monsoon (best name in wrestling, imo), and Bruno Samartino ( only guy to ever pickup the 600lb. Haystack, and then drop him from shoulder height). Good stuff.

Edit: I tried to remove that redundant "best", but it isn't in the editing post. Wierd?

Its there right after "Monsoon," at least on my puter.

There's no redundant "best" in that quote, Cory.

FWIW, here's what it says on my puter: "...Gorilla Monsoon (best (best name in wrestling,..."

A wierd computer anomaly??

It didn't work, its same as before. But I will say that recommendation sounded, well, bad ass, for cyber talk.

I picked it up from Craigslist, they tell you to do that after editing an ad so you can view the current version of your ad.

My grandfather was a big fan of pro wrestling. I recall many a night seeing him in front of the tube drinking his highball and getting mad. He wouldn't entertain the idea of it being staged. He liked Dick the bruiser.

Haha- my grandfather too. He would say "they are finely conditioned atheletes."

Dick the bruiser?? That sounds kinda wierd!

I did once see an amazing move in the ring: a guy was on his back with the other guy approaching him to jump on him or whatever. The grounded guy popped into a bridge position and shot between the guys legs to get away, still in the bridge. It makes my scalp/hair hurt everytime I think of it!
