Tree I.D. Help

Ok, here's what I got.

Seed pod is 4 sided, almost hollow like.

Bark on new wood was very striped, red, white, light brown.

Thought it was cornus alternifolia, but the pods not matching from what I've found.

Customer thought cornus too, but she was unsure.
 
Is that a nut or a pod, hard to tell. What about some kind of Hickory. Carya cordiformis. I've never seen one, not even sure if they grow here.
 
Dogwood has a fruit that is a berry. Also those leaves look palmate while dogwoods are opposite. Hmm....
 
Great job. Maybe another good indicator would be the bark on the younger shoots? Your right the fruit is unmistakable.
