I think there is a data base kept on tree failures. I don't know why some industrious college student couldn't keep a base on tree loss. We have been through a drought in this area 2 times in the last 30 years. Each time thousands of Norway Spruce died, borers stage massive attacks, mature beech, sugar maple and many other trees die. Conversely hickories with a huge tap root seem to thrive and ring porous trees that take a "big drink" and then do not need so much the rest of the season do quite well.

Virulent fungi could be quantified as to the span of useful life that can be expected upon initial infection. So much information that would take us out of the guessing (and unprofessional) state of our craft could be improved upon.

Could go on with many other reasons.

I thought so..Imagine a data base that recognized tendencies for thresholds and then these Norway spruce would have augmented watering or beech treated preventively for borers, etc. etc. until the impasse had elapsed?
