Can anyone eloborate on why tree bark discolors along city streets.

Bark and branches are turning black on willow oaks around major streets.

Is it on a particular side of the trees? Always toward the street? north? sticky? wash off with water? in the bark? young, old or both?

This could be fun figuring out!

If it is turning black then it is not a black discoloration, rather a black coloration.:P
Probably mold/mildew forming in bug doo.

I'll get some pictures tomorrow, young trees under 25 years mostly.

The trees are all street side on heavy traveled roads.

Leaning towards soot.. And add road dirt.. Asphalt and rubber dust...
Can you magnify it for your self to see if the contaminate is starting to mold?
Is there black on the leaves also? Or just the bark?

Could be hypoxelon if trees are injured or dieing on that side.
