swampy, not bad for a first splice, but I'm not crazy about your locking Brummel. I drew some lines on your upper splice: the green line follows the cover and the black line follows the core. The black line takes a much sharper turn than the green, meaning you don't have good symmetry in the Brummel. It also means, when the eye is loaded, there will be very little load on the buried core (black), because it is already effectively partly pulled out.
This is a rather complex subject, and Nick and I have had some small debates about this, but I think everyone would agree that the Brummel should look highly symmetrical. This would imply that both legs of the rope, where the buried splice begins, would bear equal shares of the overall load.
Your lower splice looks MUCH better than the upper. As far as safety goes, I doubt if there is much difference. If either splice comes apart, the Brummel will save the day. With the very short bury you are employing, you are really betting your life on the Brummel, not the splice.
