Approx. three weeks ago my Scout troop that I help with was part of a Boy Scout Expo. The organizers had seen our zip line setup at another Scout function and asked us to do it again...so we did.

The Scouts are getting pretty good at paying attention to safety...minimal machismo stuff when they are working at height. The one in the last picture (with my extra New Tribe on) is asking for arborist rope for Christmas (he already has a saddle)...his father called me yesterday for ideas on rope.

Lots of picts...be warned.

Panther, honestly, you are awesome! What a cool experience for those boys! Not only the zip part, but the building it and feeling a part of something. Just awesome.

This may be the record for posted pictures!!!

We had a lot of good adult help and LOTS of good Scout help...they guys did a fine job. They were very good about manning their stations so the visitors could have fun with the bridge and zip.

We used redundancy whenever possible...e.g., two overhead lines and pulleys.

Good timing...Hayden is just starting to stir. TIme to go make breakfast for a three year old...hoorah!

That last "big Scout" on the zip line was our Scoutmaster, Bill...he always says, "As long as I am having fun, the kids are having fun". That's the tack I take, too.

Bill is very adventure-oriented and knows how to rope me into some fun projects.

awesome work Gary, way to scare those kids:lol:

dont know if you or the troop are interested but thought Id put it out there, this is a pretty cool rope for zippin and is dirt cheap. Only problem is it is hard to work with as it is so stiff and needs mechanical attatchments but when its in place its good to go

http://cgi.ebay.com/Samson-DURAVET-...61574QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

I have 250' of the 50mm ( circumference ??) which is rated at 17000 lbs

That is AWESOME!! We did stuff like this when I was in scouts, and it has left a deep impression on me. I am really looking forward to doing this with my kid!

Haha...some would do the bridge but absolutely NOT go up to do the zip...we didn't pressure them much...they just need to grow into some things.

Dang...."DURAVET 27MM (5/16") X 410'." Over 400 feet for $65??? that's a great deal...this batch is 7,000 lb. test.

Thanks for the lead.

GREAT pics, Gary! I'll leave them up on the computer for my husband to check out when he gets home. He came home early and is now out with his troop delivering Christmas fruit baskets. :D

He (and my son) are fortunate to be part of a troop that is very active also. What I think is funny is that the 'boys' never want to leave the troop....so when they go camping, the adult:kid ratio is pretty high. In fact, their last outing there was four adults, and ONE KID for the first night. They put up a zipline, but I'm sure it wasn't anywhere near as elaborate as yours.

I've watched the effect this kind of organization can have on some boys, amazing. Many have no male role model in the home, and the leaders make sure they give them as much guidance as they can. Sometimes it's just leading by example, and sometimes its a verbal 'kick in the butt'.

Thank-you for being part of the process.

Thanks for the kind words, Che. It is good to hear that your "boys" are troopers, too. We have also had trips where the adults were in very high attendance...I understand.

Nice, Gary, guess you'll never quite know how some of those kids may have been inspired. Something they are bound to remember.

As with all your endeavors Gary I have but one thing to say, more rope.

Haha...I guess you are right...there is usually a LOT of rope involved...and biners, too.

Thanks, Woodworkingboy, we always hope it will expand their world a little.

Looks pretty cool! some years ago, I took a saddle and rope on a campout and let the boys climba tree. It was just up and down, but they did enjoy it. I always wanted to do it again, just never did.
