Going on an angle is easier than straight ripping, but possibly less smooth IDK. Max width is definitely perpendicular. https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200685584_200685584?cm_mmc=Google-pla&utm_source=Google_PLA&utm_medium=Logging%20%3E%20Chainsaw%20Bar%20%2B%20Chain&utm_campaign=Oregon&utm_content=60453&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjbveBRDVARIsAKxH7vmpLjnVjwySELGt09jGos__E9iAfCjRzu4brKqw5tSlGfYJ6f-ha20aAsaBEALw_wcB looks like 10 degree filing. https://granberg.com/ripping-chain/ 10 degree plus scored/ cut-off cutters.

40 ton should be 120’ +- from my recollection. 80’ radius would kinda suck though. Always does.

Busy couple of days -- bunch of pruning yesterday morning, then on to the main gig: a property outside of town, dropping two Siberian elms (one co-dominant) flanked by Osage oranges, so it was a crispy clump of yuck. Got the leaders down & chipped, then on to pruning a large pin oak over the driveway, and lifting the canopy of another oak. Ran out of daylight, so back this morning. We lifted the canopy on 2 more maples, climber took another maple off of the house roof and I trimmed off some lower limbs. Then I cut up an ash spar and took down the rest of the Siberian elm spars and chipped them up. Then a whole row of trees -- Osages and elms got a canopy raising. Done around noon. Afternoon job was trimming a silver maple, trimming & deadwood 3 pin oaks, trimming a red bud and 2 more silver maples out back. We had a nice afternoon at the new golf course -- homeowner's property abutted it, we needed to drop a 14" silver maple leader into the course, as well as bomb some more maple limbs out on it. Then drove the chipper truck across the field (future green) and backed up to the pile, winched stuff in. Good thing the course is still under construction (still heavy equipment all about), or they would've been less than thrilled at our maneuvers!

We worked the other day just down the street from some line clearance guys. Chatted with their foreman for a moment, he said they top out at $18-20/hr for climbers. Bet people don't stay long at that pay rate! For comparison, our city arbs pull in $18-25/hr. Then by chance an Amazon delivery driver pulled up and chatted with her for a moment. They get $15/hr to start and work 4 x 10s a week + OT if they want it. Just to put it all in perspective -- they have quite an easier go of it (by her account) and pull in decent wages. We're seeing 2 of our main competitors in town having workforce difficulties -- one drove by today with a sign on their truck that read "Now Hiring!" I'm sure ground crew people reconsider their line of work when they can run a delivery truck and operate at a much gentler pace for about the same money.

Doesn't a 40t have a lot more than 80' of reach? Maybe you're talking side reach, with 120+' of boom length.

Cool wood chimney/bonfire idea, Rich, let us know how it works out. How did you cut around the pipe, or did you cut thru it?

August, from the looks of your latest video, you allude to possibly purchasing a crane? If so, that's great -- seemingly the last major hole in your (already impressive) kit. We love our log grapple truck, since it meets several needs in one (grapple, log truck, crane). But we are finding the 50' reach a limiting factor, so now we're mulling over the idea of a 40 ton crane with 80-120' reach -- something a bit more dedicated for crane-style removals. Looking forward to see what iron you're adding to your kit!

The whole thing is worrisome and stands to strengthen the divide in this country. Are they really so bold to think they can break through the U.S. border?
