The Official TreeHouse Martial Arts Thread!

Sorry @cory I just refound this thread. As you know I just started BJJ a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I took myself out of class for two weeks by getting snipped. I’m going to drill tomorrow but not going to roll for another week at least. I’ve been going and observing though. Picking up a lot and seeing a lot of translation from when I took judo and aikido 25 years ago. We’ve been basically working on escapes from guard or passing guard. Wednesday they tossed in some judo take downs which I enjoyed.

Nice, Rich. Funny I was just going to ask you how your bjj journey is going when you mentioned it in another thread. Keep us posted!

Sean, it's april 13, biggest n best card in ufc history

Nice one Rich. Keep at it mate.

Today was a good day. Haakon and a few team mates competed at the Ippon Cup BJJ comp. The Ippon cup is o e of the oldest Judo competition in Norway and few years ago they introduced BJJ.

Great tournament and setup. Haakon had 5 in his group so they did a round Robin style setup. Fight everyone and most wins takes the gold.

Haakon had 4 fights. 1st fight won by submission from guard. Second fight was 2-2 at the end and Haakon won by advantage. 3rd was 0-0 but Haakon took it on judges decision based on activity and searching for subs. 4th fight the same, 0-0 and took the judges decision as he was more active in searching for subs.

He was a bit pissed he did t get the subs in the last 2 matches but watched them back and was happy with the wins and his decisions during the matches. He now has something work on the coming weeks.

Most importantly, his knee was fine and held up well with no pain after 4 pretty tough matches.

I missed that Bo vid, I'll check it out.

So ftr, at UFC 300, Max Holloway vs Justin Gaetche was one of the prime match ups of the night. They both have deep fight resumes, Max is former 145 champ. They were fighting for the so called BMF belt in a scheduled 5 rounder. In closing moments of rd1 Max likely broke Justin's nose with a spinning back kick/heel to the face. They fought on into the 5th round with Max up on the scorecards, the fight was in the bag for him. But instead of coasting and winning by decision, with 10 seconds left in the fight he risked everything and signaled to Justin and pointed to the ground meaning 'lets stand and trade right here right now. He's done that twice before leading to epic finishes. Here's the clip of what happened last night, it left the mma world dumbfounded.

Max is a legend

Haha.

I have known Jompoo (the guy who posted the clip) for around 20 years. He runs a gym in Leeds and my mate is married to his sister and runs Kiatphontip Bangkok. We trained there in 2018.

Jompop first came to the UK and for 13 month he worked at Keddles Gym in Orpington. We used to train there for 17+ years and Haakon and his little brother first started there. Fond memories and good times.

Jompop is a legend. Such a great personality and his knowledge of Muay Thai is second to none. Proper joker who sees even a comical moment when a fighter gets knocked out.

I have never seen him lose his temper or get angry.

His son Theo is making waves in the junior scene in the UK.

Speaking of Martial Arts.

I don’t think I mentioned it here, but Haakon fubar’d his knee again on the 20th March. It required surgery again.

He went in 3 weeks ago and had successful surgery to his right knee. Seems to be recovering well but still got another 3 weeks on crutches before the real rehab starts.

A bit of bad luck I guess, but he still seems
Keen and motivated to get back to training and winning ways.

I spent a week training with a BJJ instructor 20 years ago.
American, former wrestlng World champion.
He told me that a friend had invited him to come train in his BJJ dojo.
So he showed up, full of himself, World champion and all, and they had him roll with a green belt,.........!
Who tied him into a knot!
Greg switched styles after that.

Great instructor, no ego, fine to roll with.
As opposed to those who tear your arm off to show how good they are.

Hope he heals well. Was this a cumulative injury or a heel hook gone bad?

It was a stupid injury really. He was doing some Muay Thai sparring as he had been offered and MMA fight. Really light technical sparring with the coaches son.

Other kid caught Haakons left leg after a round kick. Haakon tried to twist out of the catch by turning to his right and you try and slide your leg out near the groin area. Fairly standard stuff but it was his right leg that popped at the knee and tore a new chunk in his meniscus. His leg locked short of straight as somehow the tear had flipped over on itself and goin into the knee joint.

All stitch back together and stuck back down now.

He is a bit sore but can hobble and he says it feels better that last time.

He is young and should bounce back.

It is usually the white belt battles where a rock with a lack of skill/technique meets and immovable object, also with a lack of skill/technique that make me sore.

I love rolling with higher belts. Yeah they pound me, but I still feel more in control to actually try certain techniques.

I am fully aware they are giving me positions and once they have had their fun they tap me out.

They also are really good at deconstructing a technique and then building it back up to show you little tweaks and tips to make something lock in tighter.
