Raining to beat the band right now!! Lightning and all!!! I just got home from work, again, there is about 1/8" of ice on everything but the roads right now. They are saying up to 1" of ice by tommorow PM.
The stores here are sold out of generators and icemelt already. I fired up my welder earlier and bought fiften gallon of gas, jus in case. I had hoped to had a fire going by now, but being home an hour and a half, then going back in for an hour and a half, no time for that.
I think this might get really ugly here!!!

I just heard the weather channel say at least one inch of ice expected for some areas with freezing temps to last for several days beyond the event.

I can't even fathom a full inch of ice coating everything up.

Around here its just get it to the curb. The cities & contractors come through & do the pick up. If it's bad you just get it all to the curb for about 2-3 weeks. After that you got to haul all debris.

No body & I mean nobody here hauls anything for the first couple of weeks.
It could still go either way here in my part of Kansas. Local station says it will all be slush by morning. The temperature is still a degree or two to warm. But ice is still forming on the trees.

We always hauled the day we cleaned up, but that is why we charged more, and I always had a place to pile it up and burn it later.
What I loved were the ones we asked if they wanted it cut up fo firewood size, "Heavens no, I don't want that wood!!" They would call my other buddy up asking for firewood, "We are all out of seasoned wood, all we have is green that is cut and split." "I'll take whatever you have!!"

I always find it interesting how most people get all wigged out when the power goes out for a half day or a day, even a few hours. It really doesn't inconvenience us significantly until it gets over 48 hours, and then only because the refrigerator/freezer begins to warm up.

Life just goes to hell when the ice for my nightly glass of scotch begins to melt ;) .

Now let it go down for a couple of weeks and I'll be whining with the rest of the wimps.

sawinredneck

I have to dissagree with you Burnham. The neighborhood I live in is ALL electric, many families, myself included, have small children. Small children have many needs!!
Last time we did this ice storm thing it was 0 the first night and 19 the second. This time it has been 32ish, a HUGE difference!! I have an airtight stove and only burn Hedge, without the genset I was doing good to hold 60 in the house. Without that airtight, as many neighbors found out, life is miserable without power!!!

Burnham
12-11-2007, 05:51 PM
Well, it definitely is a matter of being set up beforehand to be less dependent on electricity should it not be there, as is fairly frequently the case out in my rural neck of the woods.

If you don't do that, then I reckon it has to be hard to do without.

I just cannot imagine failing to arrange my home so it is of little consequence should the juice fail.

People without electricity have been raising children for a very long time...I'd be the last to say "let them suffer", but I'm confident small children could live comfortably in my house without electricity.

I am "set up" and very well "aranged" now, but all I had before hand was the wood heat and flashlights. Thank goodness the wife was pregnant at the time of the last storm!!

All I have is wood heat and flashlights now, really.

We heat 95% with wood anyway. I don't own a generator. We can cook on the wood stove and on the stovetop in the kitchen (the range is propane, so the oven needs electricity to operate the valve, but the burners light with a match). We can flush the toilet with water in a bucket from the creek. We store 50 gallons of potable water in the house year round. We can heat a pot of water on the woodstove for a simple bath or to shave. We don't use many electric appliances or entertainment items. We have a couple of gas lanterns for working in the kitchen or reading, and kerosene lamps for other lighting needs. It isn't all that hard a way to live...relatively short-term :) .

Andy, I'm not meaning to come across as dissing your neighbor's dependence on electricity, or yours either. Sorry if it came across that way. I just can't see letting my family be in that position.

sawinredneck
12-11-2007, 06:33 PM
You're not "dissing" anybody Burnham, I get it. But you move in and don't think about it, hell I didn't!!! "All electric, cool, one bill!!!" Myself and others, are learning that line of thought, well, SUCKED!!!
The airtight I have now, an older Buck, I have to have power for the blower motor or it burns out:cry:
My dad has the larger version, as well as natural gas (I know, I know) and he bought a deep cycle battery and a small power inverter just to run the blower on his stove!!!
I have a propane grill, as well as a wood burning grill, I can get water at the artisian well if needed etc.
I just have gotten used to being the only house in the neghborhood in the darkness, with all the lights on, warm and toasty, cooking dinner and doing laundry:D

DTW902
12-11-2007, 06:33 PM
It's tough for those that live in the larger towns and cities. Not many creeks run through these towns, the lift pumps don't run with out power so that means the sewer will be backing up in a pro longed outage. Not many homes are set up to be heated with just wood.
When it is freezing out and they have no heat, water, sewer, or lights things get crazy. Yes people raised a lot of families without all these conveniences but they were already set up for that life style.

oh, and I still have a PUR water filter hand pump thingie so if it comes to it I can pump water at about 1.5 liters per minute from almost any water source and have it fit to drink. ;-) Next time the wife isnt looking I will be buying an MSR filter tho, or Katadyne. Cha-ching!

Not really Frans, we had a major one in 1991, it was devastating. There was alot of work for a year.

But after that there was no work for 5 to 6 years. I mean none, We all suffered. Anybody who had tree work to do had it done right after the storm.

In some ways they do not help us tree guys at all.

Skwerl
12-11-2007, 07:41 PM
My area is suffering from the same fate, as is much of the Gulf coast. 2004 was devastating and everybody and their retarded cousin were buying Crapsman chainsaws and selling 'treework'. Within a year all the work was done and most trees don't need annual work. The last two years have been dead with this year being about 50% off of average. My biggest client said he could have done all of this year's work in 4 months.

The worst part is everyfucking body insists on consoling us with the observation "Boy, if only you had a good storm this year".

If you need a storm every year or so to keep your self in business then I would say you need to find another line of work.
I would rather just have good old steady flow of business, These ice storms put a hardship on everyone, extra money is hard to come up with at Christmas time. Frans it's not just your block thats without power. It's the whole area, it's hard to get anything. Hard to get fuel for your trucks and equipment let alone your generator. How many gas station's in your area have generators to run the pumps.

I have my BBQ that has a burner and we have water for the toilet in the swimming pool. We could get by OK for a while. I actually cooked on the fireplace a few years ago just for fun. we had one at a greenhouse / store I worked at in the early 90's. we had a genset hooked right into the main board on a 220V plug I think. kicked on when power kicked off. all full auto. no idea of the Kv rating of the old beast.

12-12-2007, 12:04 PM
you guys need to seperate your home off the main circuit before you charge up your house with a generator. the power will back feed into the power grid. transformers work both ways so your generator will put high voltage out on the far side of the transformer and possibly kill someone working on the lines.

squisher
12-12-2007, 12:11 PM
Good advice Willie, I beleive all homes up here have a mainbreaker/cut-off after the meter but before the fuse panel. So I'm assuming that would be the switch to throw and tie your gen in after that switch but before your breaker box?

Burnham
12-12-2007, 12:33 PM
If you set up with a gen of sufficient size to power up much of your home, the "proper" way to do it is with an auto switch-out box. This device automatically isolates your home from the grid when you power up you gen, so that feedback into the grid is impossible. Any competant electrician can tell you more...I'm less than competant :).

If you use a small gen to run some lights, maybe cool the fridge down off and on, that sort of thing, then just plug what you want to run into a heavy extension cord from the genset, keeping those things isolated from your house wiring.

Be extra cautious of where you set up the genset. Think about carbon monoxide gas...it is heavier than air and can collect in basements or crawl spaces through foundation vents. Of course, never run one in your house or garage.

squisher
12-12-2007, 12:35 PM

12-12-2007, 05:54 PM
What I have done, not the proper thing I know, was to take out my 220v welder in the garage (don't need it now:D ). It had a 60 amp breaker and plenty of extra wire, for moving the welder outside. I leave that breaker turned off all the time. When the power goes out I turn off the main breaker, turn on the welder breaker, turn off everything but one light, and fire up the generator.
A smaller 110v genset can be plugged in an outlet, as Burnham said, then turn off the main again.

You are supposed to use a disconnect, manual or auto. A breaker does not isolate the common/ground wire so there is a chance that you can back feed juice through the common/ground. A actual disconnect isolates both hot leads and the common/ground.
You can hard wire it to your gen set or wire up a outlet under your disconnect and make a pig tail to go from the house to your gen set.

They do have the plug in on them, but many come with the proper connector, and they are easily bought.

I bought a 5500w after the first hurricane to hit Orlando back in 2004. It was the day after the storm and I got lucky and found out from a buddy that an Ace Hardware 20 miles away was getting in a shipment of 200 the following morning. Now it's four to twelve here!! They alway have that dividing line down the tunpike, pluse or minus fifty miles. And it kep shifting tonight!!! I think Dave will dodge the bullet on this one, he should have less than three, but................
We have freezing rain and sleet right now, under a witer storm warning, and a heavy snow warning already.
The genste is still plugged in, and I still have ten gallons of fuel sitting, plus the eleven in it, and LOTS of batteries for the flashlights. I even brought in some wood so it would be dry and I wouldn't have to work so hard starting a fire this time, DUH!!!!!:D

Not quite 100 miles East of here, to Fredonia KS. It was interesting to see how differently areas got hit!! About 45 miles east, there was still 3/4" of ice on the trees and 2 inches of snow. Another 10 miles, right around where Dave lives, maybe an inch of snow. Got to Fredonia, four to five inches of snow still on the ground.
The highways were very good, in town, it was miserable driving!!

you guys need to seperate your home off the main circuit before you charge up your house with a generator. the power will back feed into the power grid. transformers work both ways so your generator will put high voltage out on the far side of the transformer and possibly kill someone working on the lines.

The snow & wind started here just as I went up a fairly tall White Pine. Tall for here any ways.... I really enjoyed it..... It was surreal. The wind bringing snow racing down off the Flint Hills some 40+ mph with the temp well below freezing.
But there was also a serene, peacefulness for me in this moment of time. With weather putting an end to the buzz of all distant saws working the aftermath of the storm.

I wrestled free a hanger & as I turned to toss it so it would clear the fence below I caught the glimpse of a woman's, wide eyed, smiling face, peering from a second floor window, from the house I was working at. She waved. I did the same in return.

In this moment, working that tree there was a fraction of time where it truly felt as if I was king & there was peace on all of the earth......

Man, I'm so glad it doesn't get that cold here. I'd freeze my nuts off.

Our storms come mostly out of the south with high wind gusts to 100 plus, but temperatures seldom below 40. Trees snapped, up rooted and jackstrawed. Always good for a couple weeks of intense sawing.

Poweroutages can be extensive though. Weeks sometimes. City water still runs. That's good. Most people have wood heat.

A lot of people ban together at the pubs where gensets keep lights and tv going, wood stoves to cook food for all. Even at its worst it's really not bad. We're not freezing.

Got there and they were trying to run the forklifts in this crap! They got one stuck, then two others stuck trying to get it out!! That took an hour with my truck. Then another one got stuck at another building. A semi got stuck/jackknifed geting out of one of the buildings. I called the company that was supposed to plow it, "Are you sure you really need it plowed today sir?" I tell them the story, "Yeah, we'll be out in an hour!" Two hours later she calls back, "He's in town plowing, and you are right up on the list and he will get there, as soon as he gets his truck started." Yeah, going well so far!!
So two PALLETS of ice melt later, I got a spreader and hooked it up to the back of a golf cart (don't ask). Then I took a pallet on the forklift and plowed what I could with that.
