I think it is a very pretty area. It is a little off the beaten track. I have been camping up there but have never done tree work there. Check out lake Pillsbury while you are there. Good luck with the move.

Nice, Clearlake is mellow.
What town are you looking at? What side, North or South?
There is a bit of a difference.
I've done a bit of work up there.
Hot as Heck in the summer.
Mendo Forest is awesome.

Clearlake has the dubious distinction of being the meth addict capital of Calif.
FYI.
Their are nice areas, but for some reason the few climbers who I know all come down here for work.
Clearlake was the place of a mercury mine long ago. Dont know if the lake is still contaminated or not..
Sorry to be so negative. I do have some friends who moved there and they are nice folks who own horses and have a stable.
I just dont think it is a place to try and do tree work as a living.

EDIT: Meth capital?

Though there were once mercury mines in the area the mercury content in the lake is au-natural from the volcano, Konocti. My understanding anyway.
Meth capital? I though Willets was. It is bad though, everywhere.

Mark, I spent every summer in Nice (clear lake) growing up. My grandparents had a trailer there on the highway and sold antiques through a small shop. Just hearing about clear lake makes me nostalgic, great place for a boy to grow up... the lake and country and clean air... my brother and I would build tree forts and go fishing before dinner, then go to church on Sunday mornings. That kind of place when I was there.
However, as I got older I realized it can be a bit depressing there, maybe the whole meth scene (which is big there). It's a ton cheaper and you can get as rural as you like. Try it out, and if you love it most people stay there for the rest of their lives. Good luck!
As far as the tree work scene goes, I only know of one guy there who I worked with through Pacific Tree Care last summer. He has one truck and a chipper and seems at first sight like a renegade tree guy. No PPE and long hair, pretty clasic character. Anyway, he got up in the tree and was making perfect pruning cuts and did a great job, I loved the contrast! Check out Pacific Tree Care in Calistoga, pretty good company and might make more sense to make the commute and work in Calistoga rather than working for low wages in Lake County (which I am sure you can't make a whole lot up there, tree care isn't on the top of people's priority list I would imagine).

Pacific Tree Care was seriously robbed by a meth head living in Lake County.

Did anyone mention the mutated rogue alligator that lives in the lake and feasts on small children?
When I worked for a tree service in Santa Rosa, the Foreman of that crew lived up in Clear Lake. He was as sweet and easy to get along with as the Court mandated anger management classes could make him and hadn't driven down to San Fran to beat up gay people on a Friday night for some time. I wonder if he still lives there? Nah, he's probably moved to Soledad or Pelican Bay.

I shot 3 of them, only 1 going over 100 lbs. It the deer here. I grew up in Patterson which was really close to the coastal mountains and the deer there were all messed up. They used to migrate from the hills down to the San Joaquin river for the summer and when they put in the Delta-Mendota canal in the late 1950's it cut them off. So now you had to go 10 miles into the hills before you saw any deer and then they caught Blue Tongue. The biologists think it was brought in with some infected cattle. I haven't hunted them in 24 years. I feel like we should let the numbers rebound some before we start and I'm getting too old and lazy anyway.
i dont think they are managed well down there, fewer tags would be good but i wouldnt stop hunting
stehansen
11-20-2007, 10:51 PM
Yeah, you are probably right. The place where we used to hunt used to cut off hunting on labor day as the owner didn't want any hunting during the rut.

Is tree work grouped under Landscape Contractor?
jp:D
stehansen
11-28-2007, 11:12 PM
No, it is a C61 which means that it is a limited specialty and then tree service is a D49, so for classification it reads like this C61/D49. So on that web page that I linked you to you click on the hypertext (43 different licensing classifications) and then you scroll down to C61 and click on that and then all the limited specialties come up and Tree service is D49.
Frans
11-29-2007, 09:43 AM
go for the C-27. That way you can do anything related to the landscape. Gives you more options
stehansen
11-29-2007, 10:06 AM
As I understand it even if you have the C-27 you are supposed to have the D-49 classification as an additional classification and then you are good to go for everything. I just checked the license of our local large landscape and tree service co. and they have the two mentioned above and 3 more classes, a general building, a concrete, and a earthmoving and paving class.

C27 - Landscaping Contractor
A landscape contractor constructs, maintains, repairs, installs, or subcontracts the development of landscape systems and facilities for public and private gardens and other areas which are designed to aesthetically, architecturally, horticulturally, or functionally improve the grounds within or surrounding a structure or a tract or plot of land. In connection therewith, a landscape contractor prepares and grades plots and areas of land for the installation of any architectural, horticultural and decorative treatment or arrangement.
No, Steve. A c-27 allows any work outside the home. your local large landscape and tree co. are idiots.
I say 'idiots' because they obviously are attempting to C.Y.A., by getting overlapping certs.
This mentality pisses me off because what it does is set a precedent. So even tho the actual governing body is clear about it, some lawyer will point to this company and say, "they did it, so you should too".
This issue of contractors lic. has two main points about it. One I agree with, in that a lic. contractor is aware and bound to, certain levels of professionalism.
The other, is revenue enhancement. Prehaps even more important in the states eyes.
The state will never discourage multiple licences as each lic. bought, means 'mo money for the state.

In Hawaii, tree service is C27B and hydro mulching is a C27C. If you have a C27 (landscaping) you automatically have the B & C subclassifications. A C27B in Hawaii does not allow you to do tree planting, only pruning and removals, including stump grinding.
