In this conversation of cable speed ,I might bring up the subject of voice over IP.
I got in a little tiff with the phone company over prices and went total cable perhaps 6 months ago.It was not without difficulties. It took persistance but it works just dandy now and perhaps half of what it had cost before.
While the use of just cable tv and internet had proven relatively trouble free, the addition of voice over IP had it's problems. The dummies from the cable company could not find the problem until they brought in an expert who found a bad connection within 15 minutes of trouble shooting.
I suppose you get what you pay for.Nine dollar an hour help is just nine dollar an hour help.

Butch, winders limits the speed that your machine will recieve data. This is just a registry hack that increases the tcp/ip recieve window size, allows your machine to recieve data faster. Some people notice a big increase while othes may not notice any at all... Either way it won't hurt your system, just changes a registry value.

I'm skeered to mess with my registry. That page was kinda confusing to me...

It's really simple Butch, forget all the bullchit tech babble on the site. Only two files you need. l'll assume you're running XP, scroll down the page to Method 1 and download 2KTCP32K.REG and 2KTCPundo.inf to your desktop. Double click on 2KTCP32K.REG hit "YES" and reboot, that simple. The other file is incase you want to undo the changes.

Comcast cable is now out my way... but since there was never any cable installed at my house it will cost more for them to run the line from the pole. I have DirecTV instead of cable TV... and Comcast requires me to have cable TV installed before they will even run DSL to the house.
Verizon doesn't have any high speed option out my way, and neither do the local internet companies. This dial-up BS is gettin' old.:( :X

I had dial-up for years and when I worked at Gallo Wine I would leave my laptop at work on and dial into it with my home computer and surf the web remotely using my work connection. When I quit there, DSL was just becoming affordable and I got that. We don't have cable available where I live or I would probably have it as I think it is usually quite a bit faster. I could get business DSL which is comparable to your cable speed for about $50/month, but that's too much money. DSL is $14.95 here, and the speed is about like sotc's pre cable speed.

Just the same somebody put it all in english "kb/s I know, I think" but wtf is "ping" and what ever else that is involved with a fast connection. Seems from my prior post on my work computer I could get faster from other cities than within 50 miles that mine said would work best. work was around 8000 both ways and I found other places I could go 12,000+
Just curious... Anyway since I learned how to get this inbed stuff, and that is where I am heading ,I need to know.

my guess is ping is the time it takes for a server to acknowledge your system trying to access it, sorta like sonar?
its a teensy file I would assume or cookie or sorta idea I am thinking. My speed is about the same as your readout there Rotax. been the same reading here for about 6 or 7 years, two different households, same ISP.

'ping' is the time it takes the signal to travel from the server to your computer. A higher ping rate indicates a bigger lag time.

Alright, I just moved to a new place. I'm stealing wireless from somone and it is slooooooooow. It varies in a few places around the house. I ordered DSL Elite from ATT yesterday, and it get's hooked up tomorrow. I wanted to do a couple speed tests now, then again tomorrow to see the difference.
Here are some tests from 2 locations in the new place.
I have to go find out how many megabits in a kilobit now.

nick
NickfromWI
12-04-2007, 10:10 PM
So I just learned from google that 840 kilobit = 0.8203125 megabit.
Even though windows told me I had a 24.0 mbps. Whatever.
So I signed up for the Elite 6.0 megabits service from ATT. If I am getting .82mbps right now, when I am up to speed, google says 6 megabit = 6,144 kilobit which will be WAY faster than what I am dealing with now. About 7.3 times faster....
yee haw!!!
I wish I was in a verizon FiOS service area....

The windows number, I think, is the speed your wireless card is capable of, it doesn't have to do with your connection speed.

The term is piggybacking, I'd never steal from a neighbor. So you're gonna spend how much a month for faster internet? I'm saving six to eight hundred a year right now.

I am hooked up now. Not wireless, yet. I didn't have time to chat with them online about that yet. This doesn't seem much faster.
Hmmm....

Steve, that is really slow. What kind of connection do you have?

If your result seems slow, then try a couple different test servers. The Orlando server is horrible but I get great numbers when I test on the Atlanta server.

I had to do some trouble shooting and learned a few things.
First is the time of day, it's like driving, when traffic is high you slow down.
Another thing is a wireless router will slow you way down.
I also learned my modem was bad, so I had that replaced.
I got my best speed up to about 15Mbs, but after the wireless router and in normal traffic it's about 3Mbs.

The other thing is the wireless card in my computer was old and it was only rated at 11Mbs, so that was limiting. The newer ones are mostly 54Mbs, that's the number you see when you put your mouse over the connection icon.

I agree!!!! So far so good. Now if Tyler could get his going, we got a wireless router and a adapter thing for his comp. This one connects to the router via a cable. Anyway his says it has full strength signal but it will not bring up the net, it keeps saying page not available. I think he is about ready to boot it out the window....

You may have to hardwire it in to set up the router connection initially. I have always had to do that when I set up a new wireless router in the past.
Oh, and the damn CD that comes with the linksys router is trash! Look in the book and it will give you an ip gateway and you can set it up from there easier.

About what mine does to my laptop through the Bluetooth.
It works, and there really isn't anything better to be had in my neck of the woods.
